pics of my problem

Hi all you pro folders;)

I know the folders here at OC3D are great so i wanted to ask you for your help(again, sry but i'm determined to fix this issue). You might have seen my earlier thread before about having troubles with my GPU (in my laptop, which is a M17x rev1 with a GTX 260M) i will attach a screen shot of what is happening at AUTODETECT , notice the times between the failures, and i have posted a second screen shot with the force gpu set to fermi and gpu3 on, again notice the timings and the temps in the second pic.

from what i see i don't understand.... using auto detect it uses gpu2 and g80 but fails immediately, and doesn't even get a chance to get hot. whereas with gpu3 and fermi settings, which i would think are more demanding, it works for several minutes and then fails, but i can tell it at least works a bit, seeing as how the temps go up...

any help or diagnostics u need to help me would be much appreciated

thank you for your time =)

from what i can see, it is an alienware laptop

you cannot thrash that board under-stress-gpu-ing

it may be a good lappie - but it was not designed to fold...

are you serious... shit... sorry just always regret blowing money on this thing (i bought it before knowing much/anything about computers and building PC's... just thought it'd be good for uni and games

so sad.... )

at least i know a lot more now and will never make that kinda of stupid mistake... especially by joining this forum, i'll run things by all of you and then i'm sure i won't be stupid again

ehhe can't wait for summer = first real build !!!!!!

for playing games and for uni - that laptop is awesome.

but for folding - that is a different story - the gpu's get too hot in laptops for stressful apps like F@H

...

then again, this is only my opinion - wait until other members read this thread, you may get a more decisive answer to your woes

i have it raised up on something and i don't know what i "safe" temp is for this mobile version of the 260 but i can tell u the way i have it, and with the fans this thing has it will NOT get the gpu over 72*C, i mean with furmark running for 45min or playing games for 3-4 hours and i haven't seen more than that (and as u saw with folding it doesn't even pass 60*C ...... )

so probably its like u said, the dumb mobo is crappy.... but then again if it can handle prime and furmark together stably ... everything is defenitely getting enough power to do it thing properly... so i don't know..... It seems i'm am confusing myself even more

but thanks for the input

[should've joined a forum like this a long time ago]

OH BTW congrats on winning the snow white competition

i'd love to see some pics when it arrives

see ur setup

(oh my, your PPD is gonna go up a lot ain't it

That's a full blown GTX260 right ?

if so use it without GPU3 so disable that box , i had problems with that as well.. if i remember correctly...

well seeing as its in a laptop, and that i believe it to have a M at the end, i would say it is the mobile version, and that its not fully the same as the desktop version.

And i DID try without GPU3 (with autodetect it set it as GPU2) but that didn't even allow the card to start a WU, it just failed and went to try the next WU... at least with GPU3 on it would kinda start and do 4-5min of a WU, which usually got it pretty close to 1% (i know this cuz once it actually did show 1% right before it failed

SnW do you know of anything that i can run to check and make sure that my GPU is stable? i mean i've used furmark, and its perfectly fine with that... but maybe that doesn't really show folding stability????? {i don't know what i'm talking about, just throwing idea's out there}

You could try a game benchmark (link below to benchmarks) but to be honest furmark is pretty heavy to, in regards to stressing the GPU.

Maybe you just can't Fold on a laptop's GPU

i never Folded on a laptop , hence i hardly use mine....

Can you run GPUZ for me, on the monitoring tab, check the GPU usage on both GPU2 and 3 Client types.

Does it actually load at all?

i don't have gpuz installed but if you wanna know the gpu usage, i looked at msi's afterburner (it shows a lot of stuff) and with GPU2 client there is NO load, just fails, and with GPU3 client there is full load for the 4-5 min that it works, then fails... then when it tries again, full load till for 4-5 min and fails.

Ok, that's cool. Hmm.

Have you tried the classic Clients? They might give a different result? Do you know what architecture your 260 is based on?

Is the problem happening on the 8500gt too?

No i have not tried the "classic" clients, could you give me a link for the classic gpu client?

as for the architecture, i THINK it is G92, based on googling it said that the gtx260m and the gtx280m used 'old' G92 and only the newer gts2xx uses the GT200 architecture

and no the 8500gt is not having the same problems, (i mean it still fails sometimes... but it works, and it does complete some things, unlike the 260m which can at BEST get to 1%

You know, now I'm home and can see your pics clearer, it looks like your WU are downloading corrupt..

ohmy.gif
where do you see that? if you don't mind telling me???

and how would i fix that??? and if that the case it fact that when on GPU2 it fails immediately makes sense (since they are corrupt) but how come when using GPU3 i can fold the first % and then fail? would that just be a 'less' corruption??

The read packet limit bit in the log. Looks like a corruption to me.

Ok, try this. Delete the Tracker COMPLETELY, reboot and then redownload and initiate it. Both on GPU2, Force G80.

i got a SMP (project 6702) on right on, and it'll be done in 11hours, so i'll delete and reboot and reinstall and try again after this WU is finished (don't wanna lost almost a day of folding with my T9600, its slow enough
tongue.gif

(unless i'm really newbie, and there is a way to "save" the progress right now at 70% so after i reinstall it can resume... but i don't think thats likely )

If you weren't using the tracker I could tell you how to do that.......but I still manually config all of my 20 clients so I can do what you would like to do
wink.gif

Maybe someone more fimilar with the tracker can be of help??

It is possible to copy over the SMP folder to a new install but I've not had much success doing it if I'm honest.
