phenom to q6600

Hey guys, sorry I havnt been on here too much. But I had a question that I would like to probe you with.

currently here are my specs..

gigabyte ga-ma790fx-ds5 mobo with the latest F6 bios

phenom 9600 BE @ stock clock (oc sucks on this chip)

OCZ 2gigs ddr2 800 memory

ATI 4850 @ 700/1100

2x WD 500gb hdd, 2x WD 80gig hdd

here is the problem. I had better 3dmark06 scores with my athlon x2 6000+ clocked at 3.2ghz. That was a dual core. This is a quad.. my performance throughout my system has gone down.

every game I play doesnt yeild the same kind of fps I used to get. I understand that a lot of this might have to do with games only using a single core. but I would think that my 2.4ghz clock speed was sufficent.

I have been toying with going intel. I would want to go q6600 as I know I can get it at 3.2 on air all day long, maybe even 3.4

what do you guys think? is it worth it?

the main reason for this whole overhaul is because i got into everquest 2. I know that is a cpu dependent game an all and im running it at 1440x900 (19in widescreen monitor). A friend i built an intel system for running 2 3870x2 is getting around 80fps, and im getting like 25-30. and I have a 4850. dose not make any sense.

please help.

thx.

are you only considering quads if not i would recommend the e8400,e8500 there just lightning fast dual cores and cheap as chips, e8400 should win over the q6600 in fps gain in games but yeh if you OC the q6600 to around 3ghz that would be nice and should beat the phenoms

Meh, can you live with the frame rates you are getting now? While the 9950 overclocks well, the performance is still as crap in comparison to the Intels as any other Phenom chip.

Why not look at the 9850X4 or 9950X4 black editions?

They're about on par with the Q6600, now they don't overclock as well (despite the unlocked multiplier) and they pull more power (Have to factor in the memory controller).

With your current setup you might be better off to stick with the AMD motherboard for the reason that the 45nm Deneb phenoms are due to arrive in January and are *supposed* to work with the current AM2+ motherboards.

They're going to be clocked around 3GHz.

Just something to consider...

if this is the case i might wait. the part that sucks is even though i have the 790FX chipset. i have the SB600 south bridge. The SB700 is still not really available there only like 2 boards that have it right now.

I just flashed my bios previous to me starting this thread and I should be able to support the 9950. but I want to be at the 3-3.4ghz range. Cause like I said before, I saw better fps w/ my x2 6000+

I also read somewhere that the TLB bug causes significant loss in performance if the fix is enabled. Is this true? does this hold water? have any of you guys heard of this?

I am gonna try to disable the fix and run the software to disable it also and then try benching again. thoughts?

I have seen the 9950X4 to overclock up to 3GHz+, the best results were got with the SB700 southbridge thanks to the that new feature that was supposed to improve overclockability.

I'm not sure how you'd fare with the SB600...

My understanding is that the performance gap between the Phenoms and Intel was a lot bigger than it is now with the TLB bug.

Depending on your budget wait and get intels i7, or pick up all the cheap stuff from people selling their q6600/q9450/q9550, e8600/8500/8400 etc... Intel just walks all over AMD's cpu's atm
