phenom II or AMD FX

I want to build another rig but dont have the money to go the Intel 2011 route. If I had the money I would buy...ASUS Rampage 4 extreme 2011 and Intel 3820 2011 CPU. Since i dont have the money to build this rig, here are my questions.

Should i go phenom II X6 1090t (Dev...not Thouron, Dev is true 6 core all unlocked and Thouron is 2 of the 6 cores locked out) if I can still find one or the AMD FX CPU?

If I am to get any of the AMD CPU's it will be going into an ASUS Crosshair 5 extreme (not Thunderbolt)

I'm leary of the FX CPU's...they are the bulldozer variety correct? I've heard and seen a lot of negative reviews on the bulldozer CPU's (a huge dissapointment) and for the price of one of the better FX I could get an Intel 2011 3820 foraround 300.00 US.

What do you guys think?

Thanks in advance....

What are you looking to do with this rig and what's the budget?

FX is the chipset code for AMD. So 990FX is the code for the best BD chipset.

This is the way I see BD:

The best budget cpu for gaming currently is the 4xxx which costs ~£90

I can even see an argument for the 6xxx which comes in at ~£110

The 8xxx though is more expensive than the 2500k and performs about the same.

Then all that's left is intel.

There's nothing wrong with BD per se, just it was massively overhyped and didn't even compete which intel's cpus, which at the time weren't exactly new. The same thing would have been said of intel's IB if we had a decent AMD chip to compare it too...

do you already have the motherboard? if not then get a 2500k or 3570k

will be far better performance

Tbh I would go with Sandy bridge instead. If you insist on AMD then Phenom II x4 - x6 is better than most BD chips and the 8150 FX is a rip off for a very poor chip. Piledriver does come out in a month but it's highly unlikely we will see any significant increase in performance of the CPU. Intel Core i3's are better than most BD chips and the i5 2500k or 3570k will rival the 8150 at a much better price range. All your choice but Intel is the way to go for performance. I personally would recommend Sandy bridge if you want to overclock, but others will say Ivy bridge.

if your going amd get an amd quadcore i recently bought the 965 and it is awsome handles any games and multitiasking fine doesnt even need overclocking xD

now, id go with phenom 1100t

and im still waiting for piledriver to be released, and will be basing my next rig on that cpu, FX bulldozer series wasnt that impressive really its almost liek the ivybridge, people expected too much of it. dont get me wrong they are great cpus but just not upto the par with 2700k or even 2500k

Just bought a 8120 today for £130 and still have a 1090T so PM me after 10th May (when parts will arrive) and I'll let you know what it's like (folding performance, not gaming - under Linux).

PII > Gaming & Windows

FX > Heavily threaded & Linux

piledriver is not a CPU...it is an APU. not sure how that is going to work out but that is the direction that AMD is going to be focusing on is APU's...Intel will be only game in town and will own the market

ive just got a fx 6100, and i use it for lots of things. Gaming, programming, multimedia,

and i genuinely have had no issues with it. But like it has been said i dont think they are in the same league as intel's similarly priced cpu's which leaves us who have recently purchased socket AM3+ motherboards in a

situation were i for one am wondering whether AMD will in the next 2 years or so bring anything to the AM3+

market that would give intel a run for theyre money.

I hope so, and not just because if they dont ill have to drop a large wad of cash migrating to intel, but as long

as intel has no solid competition why are they going to push there technology further.

So my recommendation would be the FX, as i have had a very good experience with mine, and

with a good aftermarket cooler i find them pretty good overclockers.

I also have a fx-6100 and it works well with all types of gaming, on a rather moderate level. Haven't had any trouble with it except overclocking...

I have tried to overclock numerous times, with it all failing. I can't even get it up 100Mhz! It may just be my inexperience, but even at 1.23v i'm pretty sure I can get it from 3.85Ghz to atleast 4Ghz... Just seems like I can't though.

From what i have seen personally, the Phenom's are better, it seems that your are mind set on AMD so i'd say go ahead and get the Phenom X6 1100T they are great CPU's and overclock quite well. I have an AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE and it overclocks great to 4.0GHz it works smashingly.

Scream.

Well I owned a Phenom II 1100T and it was fine, BD isn't worse than Phenom per se, it just isn't any better clock for clock.

The BD will overclock a lot higher though. You'll start hitting ceilings around the 4/4.2 ghz on the Phenom IIs @ 1.475 but the BD will hit over 4.5 with less than 1.3v. So the BD will perform noticably better ultimately once you have a play around with it.

The BD is dead easy to find a black edition for overclocking goodness; the Phenom II BEs are rare as hen's teeth now.

At the end of the day though it comes down to this:

< £145 buy a Black Edition AMD cpu (4100 is great for gaming, 6100 if you want a bit more power)

> £145 buy an Intel 'K' Edition (2500k is the perfect general performance cpu, 2600k if you dabble in video editing)

You don't need more than a 4100 for gaming - get yourself the best GPU you can afford and then consider upgrading the CPU if you still have cash to spend.

Is it the 4270 that has the huge stock frequency?

I think that and a good Nvidia card will do you well. If you have CUDA you don't need to worry about CPU performance so much/ number of cores.

last year i got a 970 mobo ready for bd, then when it was released i was gutted, so i just gave my pc to my missus and built myself a 2500k system!!

Phenom II X6 are great CPUs and the motherboards to run them are great. However, contrary to what everyone else stated in this forum, it is better to give build a new PC a miss and wait to see what Piledriver has to offer. By doing this you get to save more cash and get better components.
