PCIE SSD? worth it?

My question as the title says, is it worth it to get a PCIE SSD? such as an OCZ Revodrive 3? prices on the revodrive 3's are comeing down to match SATA ssd prices and they seem to be much faster....just wondering if thats a good idea or a bad one?

sandforce controller on them slows boot time... its technically 2 ssd's in a raid 0... they are crazy fast, but unless you play skyrim, or do tasks that actually require high hard drive speeds you won't notice too much of a difference from something like a force 3 GT or a vertex 4... if you can shell out the cash and have a real reason, go for it... but unless you really need it, it is a bit of a waste right now for anyone not running a server... eventually they will become the standard IMO... but they are still high priced and some can be a little buggy I hear...

I wouldn't get an OCZ SSD at all. The SATA drives fail very often and I bet the pcie card will probably be the same. So unless you have some inside information on it (which I guess you don't since you are posting the question here) I'd steer well clear.

As with everything in life - if it's cheap; it's probably cheap for a reason. I think you'll be better off getting a decent SATA SSD like a crucial m4, intel 520 or samsung 830.

If you are really wanting speed then look into Ramdisking. Spend the same money on a few GB of 1600MHz RAM instead of a large SSD (PCI-e or SATA) and reap the benefits. The write speeds of SSDs are 500-700mb/s, maybe 800mb/s if you raid them. Ramdisks will run at more like 7000-10,000mb/s:

Honestly, if they are the same price I would go for it. the construction of the SATA drives and the revos are pretty different. I haven't heard of anybody having real issues with the revos, just little nicks here and there... but for the transfer speed they have I think it would be worth it.

yeah true they are quiet unreliable ocz SSD from the return rate figures alone and there's been a number of issues with their stability especialy if you want them for boot drives from what i've heard which is true for a lot of their products; never buy a ocz power supply! intel also make pci ssd's but their for servers soa considerable amount more expensive but worth their weight in gold for reliablity (then again ssds dont weigh much!) but if you desperatley want the speeds of pcie id consider puting 2 ssds on raid 0 to get closer to pcie speeds

Its things like this that make me pound my head on my desk... that gets rid of TRIM and depending on the drive the built in garbage collection...

Actually the revo drives were originally designed for server use too, but now OCZ has wayyyyyyy better drives out for servers... I did build a computer a few months ago with a revo drive in it and haven't heard anything bad back from the owner. I still say give it a shot if the price is similar...

while raiding ssd's does lose trim, garbage collection is not hindered by raid. And most if not all current ssd's have very good garbage collection. I have been running 2 c300's for well over a year now in raid 0 without any issues at all. They were among the first sata III ssd's released so imagine what extra benefits current offerings have.

Well the RevoDrive 3 (which yes is a bootable PCIE SSD) is in a different line than there standard SATA SSD's, im not sure how reliable the mem is....it may or may not be a better memory im not sure. also the revodrive 3 does support TRIM in its raid 0 config...i have baught the drive, the price was just too good, worked out to be cheaper than any other 240gb SSD i could buy lol...so im going to give it a try....if it does crash or fail quick then oh well, i just wont buy from them again...i do have a WD black drive in my system now that i will be useing for a backup so a drive failure will not be the end of the world for me....and hey, if it works as they say it does (this is a drive with a $600+ MSRP, not a $200 normal SSD) then great =D
