P4 problems

Recently (and spontaneously) my P4c 2.8 has been acting up. If it's under any sort of load from a game I've been getting what I can only describe as garbled colours & flickering in an artifact-esque sort of pattern. It's been getting progressively worse, right now I cant even have a download running at the same time as Generals without it happening, and HL2 is very twitchy even when it's the ONLY thing running. I don't think it is a graphics card problem...it would be running fine but then if i say start a download mid-game I then start getting problems; the new download is nothing to do with the graphics card though. I also tried overclocking it slightly, just for the sake of testing; the corruption increases (when a game is ALL i'm running) as I ramp up the clock speed (CPU). Any Ideas?

Did you lock the AGP:CPU ratio when you overclocked? Sounds 100% GFX card related to me.

then again though, I only have like 30 posts or something...

Firstly, I believe the number of posts you have is no reflection of your expertise, rather just how often you submit it.

That said, i'm not sure I follow your logic. As I pump up the speed and/or load of my CPU, my experience in game deteriorates. Why does this point to a graphics card problem?

Sounds like a power issue of some kind, but i have heard of high fsb sharding issues on some p4's which is overcome by using 865/875 tweaker and setting dram latency to 01.Have you tried a re-installing vid drivers or a full windows re-install

What power supply are you using?? Also can you overclock your gcard with no ill affectes?? Does your mobo or gcard have throttling if so turn it of ...I am unsure as I am not good with p4 but amd have a speed spread spectrum which causes instability some times also check to make sure its not a heat issue but could be a psu problem

The only time i ever get this is in memtest86 when my timings are too fast.

perhaps more vdimm and / or drop the timings?

these artefacts can normally be seen in memtest on 'certain lines of text' It looks like some weird 3dfx rasteriseing effect :)

when i get artefacts thru grfx issues they are normally white spots, or texture tearing.
