OK guys, let's see if you can give me a hand on this computer as i am tempted everyday to throw it out of the window. It's a hp pavillion zd8000 laptop pentium 4 530 prescott 3.0GHZ and 2 GB of ram. It takes about 7 minutes to boot up, and i recently installed c&c generals and it's laggy at that too at minimum settings.. The card i have it's a mobilty radeon x600 128mb. Hard disk is 75GB and 50% full. And i have no idea why it's soo darn slow..

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Fran

The only reason I can think of is the usual internet baddies, virus, trojan, malware etc, do you have a semi decent safety net set up? If not I recommend doing a Panda scan, getting AVG free, Lavasoft Adaware free and Skybot Search and Destroy. If that fails, just blame it on the grelims

Have you tried configuring your start-up programs (start > run > msconfig > startup). A lot of programs feel the need to start with windows and it can slow down your computer.

Be careful tho, there are programs in there that your computer needs to operate (usually at the top of the list)

Things like itunes, quicktime, nero etc can be turned off without any problems.

yea, might be viruses. i had a virus a long time ago that slowed my pc down alot and could not get rid of it, so i had to reinstall windows.

maybe do a defrag too

thanks guys but i have a decent protection, and i downloaded what GavX told me to and scanned the comp but except for a few minor security cookies an spywares nothing much. I have AVG but does not detect anything. Did a defrag couple of days ago but no change... I also played around with msconfig but to no avail, as there is little or no change at all... Bah i'll probably end up re-installing XP from scratch. Need to find a SP3 copy of windows though...

Can't help you there, I have about a trillion copies of Service Pack 2 for some unknown reason, my mate gave me about 50, "just incase"

This plus pre-installed manufacturer software.

Clean OS install ftw !

Just download the SP3 ISO and slip that in the drive first thing after install. I only need a couple of cds to reinstall XP, put on new drivers etc.

Thanks guys for all the help.. I ended up re-installing xp and now it's running fine again.. I discovered that i had the sp2 version of windows somewhere in the house and that was good news!!

*Diablo* I wish i could do that mate, but with my slow ass internet connection there's no way that i'll manage that... (live in uganda and i reach top speeds of 6kbps!!!) so u can imagine the average download speed!! hehe
