Overheating?

Well i didnt know if i should have put this in its own thread, or put it in the TDU thread of mine. Somebody please sort accordingly:wavey:

Anyways back in the other thread NickS mentioned using the adapters for my 7950GT and using it on my band aid PSU. Well i went ahead and tried that and played TDU maxed and it was fine. Regular heat coming off the PSU and all was well. Until i shut down and found out my card was roasting. I almost could barely take the thing outa the slot! Idk how hot it was when i turned the machine off but it was burning to the touch. Not just on the heatsink but all over the card. With my Ultra, and Antec PSUs it never got that hot before. Idk if its becasue of poor airflow or becasue of undervoltage or what. Should i continue this? Is it fine? Or just put the 6800 back and wait for my replacement PSU?

Undervoltage wouldn't cause the whole heatsink and card to get hot, only the mosfets etc would be affected. I would guess either lack of airflow or that is just how the card runs.

if its the passive one mine hits around 95c after gaming. they need really good airflow to stay cool.. i get around 50c idle is wierd lol..

I would WHACK a fan onto that beastie! :p

im looking to sell it.. ~£90 if anyone is interested im gonna put it in the for sale section when i get round to emailing the admins. lol.

Actualy i think yours like another friends has an overheating issue. Mine idles around 42c and load is about 55c. Yes its the passive one, i will be getting the Fatal1ty Zalman cooler for it very soon though. I think the aluminum fins look goofy and i like active cooling on everything anyways. I fixed the problem though, the 120mm fan i had in the front i sorta just laid against the HD cage aiming it up at the card. Seems to have fixed the problem. No point to have intake when the side panel is off. I cant even put it back on!

i like to find a nice balance lol... so im going to sell this card and get an active one.. Passsive isnt right in my new case. Not quick enough airflow. lol.

Good plan, what are you thinking of replacing it with? ;)

Either the 8800GTS 320MB or the 640MB, the 320MB is alot cheaper hence the interest, however ide rather stretch to a 640MB. Extra memory never hurt anyone :D

This seems a nice price: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=496748

And how much do you think my 7950GT XT 570M will get? lol.. im hoping around £100

Its 5 months old though.

Nice card that!

I would say around £100ish.. can't be 100% sure but sound pretty good.

If you took the card out RIGHT AFTER you're gaming, it's gonna be HOT. I mean, HOT.

My X1900GT is the same way. When I was playing with an 8800GTX, the back of the card almost burned me.

It's just the way they get :)

If you wernt in the market for DX10 id say you can do what i will be doing soon. Im getting a Zalman Fatal1ty cooler to smack on here and OC this thing. Im like you, the fan dosent make alot of noise but ive always been iffy about this passive business.

At LAN parties when i first got it i would touch it after hours of playing w/e. Games like Beefy2, BFMEII ect and it wouldnt be that hot. My dads 9800XT actualy did the same thing a couple of days ago and hes running the same case and PSU i have. Only difference is hes running a Zalman on it. When i had that card, it never got hot either. I have boss cooling in all my case. Now that i have this fan running on this thing, its not getting warm at all. Kinda zip tied it to the HD cage :p

This has only happend once for both of us. I cleaned his Zalman cooler and his card was fine, put a fan on mine and it was fine. And we already are running our AC so it stays about 79 in my room. (pretty normal for our house)

79 eek! My house doesn't have central air, so we each get a window unit :D My room doesnt go above 75. Sometimes when I leave the house for a few hours i turn it to high and come home to a ice box.

Back in the olden days of graphics cards, i was gaming for 6-7 hours, and suddenly the computer crashed, i opened it up and "oh dear". The card had got soo hot, it had bent the motherboard PCB, and some of the solder had melted on it. Needless it had to have a complete rebuild, i was very young then and was when i was running windows 95 on the familys first pc, so from now on its olny active cooling for me!!!!!!
