overheating drives= coruption?

What sort of temps can drives go upto before they start corrupting. The airflow in this case is pretty awful over the hard disks, and even 250gb storage drives get upto 40 degs :(

However, its my raptor raid that gets hottest, and i was wondering if this could lead to corruption or permanant damage?

Thanks

If u take the model number of the drive, the manufs website will tell u it`s safe high and low temps. U`d have to assume operation outside of these bounds will cause corruption or atleast "non guaranteed performance".

As a rule, I`ve always had 75 degress in my mind. But I think it changed a number of years ago - even so 75 was still considered a very maximum temp.

Be sure the holes on the drive marked "do not cover" are adhered to, this allows the drive to breathe in regards to moisture (air content).

40 degrees tho should be well in the middle of safe temps, but I`d check the model against the manufs website just incase my knowledge is aged.

40c is absolutely nothing to worry about, they are designed to run at high temperatures.

In fact, Google did a study not so long ago in one of their datacentre's and found that actively cooling a hard disk reduces its lifespan.

I could do with a read.

I can`t believe their theory on active cooling drives without seeing what they`re basing it on. I can understand if they`re letting equipment hit a temp, let`s say 70 degrees, and having cooling come on to take it to 40 or so then cutting off. That`d harm many electrical/metalic things. A constant cooling tho I don`t see it.

Ok, cheers, well its the storage drives, which actually get slightly more airflow than the raptors, and the fact the raptors are 10k. I would imagine they hit around 55 degs (raptors).. Is that something to worry about? I cant monitor their temps because its a raid so everest wont pick them up :(

Have you got any kind of thermal probe/lcd that can monitor the temps? I've got one on just taped on the top of my HDD and currently it's at 20.2*C . Obviously the probe ain't the most accurate so you could probably do +/-5* on that but it's still pretty well within comfortable limits. Also I'm not sure cos I don't have RAID but speedfan might be able to see the individual HDD temps for your raptors, even if everest wont? Wouldnt worry if you think they are at 55* though that seems pretty safe.

Nothing to worry about.

I have 4 SCSI drives in the server and each is running at about 50oC.. drives haven't been off for 7 years. :)
