Overclocking problem - Please help me

Hi all !

After OC'ing my 8800 GTS to 684 / 1566 / 792 (default memory), I was stable with 75 mins of error-free artifact scanning and at under 72C at max load.

Then I started OC'ing my Memory to 900 and I got to 684 / 1566 / 902.

After running artifact scanning for about 30 mins, it shows error...

Is this the maximum then or is my Card's memory not very good ?

What do I do -

1. Reduce my Core and increase the memory ?

2. Leave the memory at a lower clock itself ?

Please advice and help me decide...

Thanks and regards

Kush

Well if you had an artifact, lower it. Memory gets particularly hot so you never want to push it that much.

If the core is fine leave it as is.

hi there !

The thing that confuses me is that I was running this card at 675 / 1000 a few days ago, with no problems atall in any games - COD-4, Crysis etc...

Should I just revert to that setting and try again ?

Just keep dropping the speed by very small increments until you re gain stability

hi there !

Thanks again for taking the time and guiding me....

Just wanted to ask one more thing...

For testing for stability, is ATITOOL's Artifact Scanner reliable ? If yes, then how much time of scanning between each step is ideal ?

If No, then which is a better way to test for stability ?

Kindly advice...

Thanks and Best Regards

Kush

half hour maybe, hard to say, something that doesnt occur until after an hour in ATItool may kick in after 5 seconds of a certain game

other than that you can use any games of course, all the 3D Marks (preferably '06) or that HDR one i can never remember the name of

Sorry for bothering again... Actually the Artifact Scanner shows no erros or any signs of instability, untill about 50 Mins and after that (about an hour) a message like "Delta of 22 in 1 Pixels (22.0 avg). No Errors for ..." appears...

This confuses me because I cant probably run the scanner for an hour at every baby step I take...

I also use the 3dMark06 for benchmarking and testing for stability and the Tests run successfuly everytime... no probs here...

All my games work fine too...

Its just that i'm not able to determine instability concretely... any ideas or advice regarding this ?

Well if no every day applications / games / 3D mark or the program above experience instability then just check the temp on the memory chips and you should be ok

Hi again !

Thankyou so much for the kindness and for all the advice... really a great help...

I'll try that program... I guess my temps are ok too, because I was adviced to stay below 85C and I almost never reach 80C....

Just one more thing, if my Card is artifactiing even slightly (i.e un-noticable levels) and if I continue to run it at that speed, will my card be damaged very soon ? will it be in danger ?

Thanks again for all the help and spending so much time for me...

Lots of regards

Kush

Well it depends what is causing the artifacting. There shouldn't be any immediate danger unless youre grossly over the cards limit but it is probable that over time you would degrade your cards performance.

You need to find a way to measure the temperature of the memory chips on the card. Them getting too hot is one of the largest causes of artifact related threads tbh. Even if you need to stick your finger on them - scolding is too hot, burnt finger is on the edge, very hot is ok, as a rule your skin cant take over 50*C (or 60, i cant remember).

If you get a thermometer stick it on the PWM area too.
