Overclocking on a R9 290X

Hi guys.

I build my computer back in January, and I am really really happy with it. Since I got the 4k monitor just a few weeks back, I see that my 3x 290Xs suffer from time to time. Although it's not really necessary I thought I would overclock them, especially because I think my cooling can handle it.

I don't know if much has changed so far, but stability testing means 3DMark Vantage. If that benchmark runs smoothly and without errors the clock is rock stable.

I kinda hoped, that there is a number people can give me, what the average R9 290X can do. I know it runs on 1000 MHz core and 1250 MHz memory stock, and because mine are the PowerColor LCS edition, they are actually at 1060 MHz core and 1350 MHz memory (which for some reason has to be set with MSI Afterburner).

I know there should be a number most R9 290Xs reach, but I forgot it, and I was hoping that some of you guys know. Was it 1150 or 1200 MHz on the core?

Anyways, I don't intend on overclocking the memory past 1350 and I want to know whether it makes sense to set a 24/7 overclock anyway. What do you guys think?

And I don't intend on pushing the core voltage much... 1.2V would be max I want to see..

First off, I'd suggest you use a unigine benchmark to do the graphics stability. Get stable with an overclock in that for an hour or so and then play a few games. If you get issues drop a few Mhz.

Only way of knowing what your cards will do is by trying it tbh. It will depend on your air flow and cooling too. 1125 upwards I'd say.

1150 Mhz runs fine it seems. Do you think it's a good idea to run a 24/7 OC though... The graphic cards do get quite hot for watercooling since I got the 4k monitor. Which makes sense, but was yet a bit surprising. I really thought two monsta 480 radiators would cool that system with ease

It's not like it's hot. I see 52°C max on the cores.

In direct answer to OP, I believe the average would indeed be close to 1250mhz on the core. I have had 6 290x's over the past 10 months or so and the highest stable OC I could get was 1382 and the lowest of them all was 1196 though the rest were easily OCable to 1200mhz with only +100

This was the answer I was looking for. Thanks a million! I am just to lazy to test every few MHz like crazy. I am going to bench and test the 1200 MHz and keep an eye on the temps..

I have Corsair SP120 quiet edition fans, but I do have to run them on 12V. So the system is not really noisy, nor is it like super quiet.
