Overclocking my i7-7700K to 5.0Ghz at 1.270V (crashes)

Hello guys,

i'm new to OC and i been doing some research and YouTube for hours but i'm still a beggeners and i need your help.

basically i have i7-7700K (h100i v2 Cooling) and MSI z270 M5

yesterday i attempted to OC to 5.0Ghz at Vcore 1.270v

the AIDA cpu stress test showed stability and good temperature ( i didn't run the FPU stress because it will instantly show overheat.

anyways i tried to play csgo + stream it on high quality and i was able to do that for about 30 mins till i got a blue screen.

i increased voltage to 1.275v and the stress test showed high temp (90+)

so i went back -0.005 voltage.

i looked around internet and most people do 1.3v for the 5.0 OC

but since i got high temp at lower than that i didn't bother to check..

can you guys help me? should i go bellow on frequency or should i try higher voltage ? or maybe tweak with ram speed?

btw XMP was off during the whole time.

Please help because i just got my rig and would like to get 5.0 speed to be able to stream on on stable fps.

You can get high fps and stream at 4.4ghz. Why do you need 5.0? there is almost no significant improvement in real world gaming, even with high intense CPU architecture. Only people who use 5.0 usually are regular benchmarkers and even then, they rarely keep it at those clocks.

5.0Ghz, needs a good chunk of volts to keep stable, over 1.3V in many cases. Obviously the more volts you use, the more heat you will get, but I would suggest to use a comfortable clock speed that won't degrade your CPU life. If you are getting higher temp at lower volt, maybe you need to turn up your fan speed even more.

What case are you using?

To be honest, i really haven't tried any lower frequencies but i assumed cpu intensive games such as csgo and maybe pubg will really require such frequency

the reason i went for 5 is the fact my rig is capable of doing it.

what do you recommend for smooth 720/60fpz stream with 1440p CSGO resolution and in game fps of +170?

because before OCing, i was not able to maintain above 110fps which sucks for csgo considering i have got a 165hz monitor.

But even in wow, CSGO, Destiny, etc etc. I have checked FPS between my 7700k at 4.0, 4.4 and 5.1 (with 1.4V) and the difference was a massive... 8fps.

Not worth the heat and hassle. CSGO is a CPU intensive game. Anything with Source engine is, but you just have to go trial and error.

Have you capped your FPS MAX?

usually its set to 2*max refresh rate in order to keep it stable. I would suggest (if you are an avid CS:GO streamer, is to set your details on low and change your fps max to 331.

I am a little surprised you only get 110 though. my 7700k gets 130 without even trying on medium settings. Do you have everything cranked up to max?
 
You should either settle to a lower OC, 4.9GHz is only 2% less than 5.0GHz even if the other is a nice round number, and it seems you're quite close to stable...

If you're adamant on 5.0GHz, remember that AIDA64 is a worst case scenario and games will never approach the 90c.

MY Specs are
cpu: i7-7700K
gpu: MSI 1080ti
ram SDDR4 16GB 3200
MOBO: MSI Z270 M5

the 110 fps in csgo happens when i stream 2k on obs which is resalable.

im just so upset that i get everything i want with my OC 5.0!! and do everything the way i want it!!! till it blue screens in middle of stream!!

so if i was to drop it down to 4.9 , will i need to change voltage?

also when running AIDA64 i dont choose FPU and GPU test, cuz they would shut down the pc and result in heat. am i doing the stress test correct? (gpu, cache, memory and disk) ?
 
As a rule of thumb, increasing clocks decreases stability, while increasing volts increases stability. Volts also cause your chip to run hotter, and beyond Intel's spec, will wear the CPU as well. But you aren't limited by that yet, only temperature.

GPU test shutting your PC down sounds like it might be a PSU issue. FPU sounds like insufficient VRM, cooling or PSU. But that's just me guessing, takes more to figure out the reason.

Also, don't stream at 2k, 1080p30 or 720p60 work the best since you're limited by bitrate cap and can't render at the higher quality settings. Higher resolutions result in blockiness, making the resolution gain useless.

thanks for your feedback, i meant by streaming 2k is the game quality ,but stream settings is 720/60

i will try decreasing frequency but what is the range of the voltage needed for 4.9ghz? nothing bellow and above what? thanks.
 
I honestly dont see why you cant clock at 4.5 (at most) and get the same kind of results.
4.4 is far, FAR more stable. You are limited by the chip capabilities. If you get unlucky then 5.0 is just not in scope at all.
 
Honestly a chip which is borderline stable at 5.0 should do 4.8 or 4.9 quite easily, so why not aim a little higher when we're at oc3d of all places. :P

Because he wants to stream and there is nothing more embarassing that a blue screen of death when streaming. :) otherwise I'd say could go balls to the wall even if there is no significant gain at 5.0.

if i dont get result , i will drop down to either 4.9 or 4.8 i havent decided yet

but i'm not sure what voltage to start with when testing 4.9 or 4.8
 
Don't do 1.35 if lower voltage already causes thermal issues... Sometimes you have to settle with lower clocks.

1.35V may be adequate but it will degrade the life of your CPU. Not to mention the heat you will produce will rise.

Hhmm i will try to go up to 1.3v and do a test you know?

just to see how it goes because i have brand new setup so if there is heating issue with my corsair h100i v2. i would like to know about it.
 
guys, while using prime95

which stress test to go for?

there are three options and i know the difference between them (less ram stress,more cpu...etc)

im asking which one will be good for my stress test?
