Ok...little background...

I was previously running my e6600 on a asus p5n32 Deluxe WI-Fi AP edition with 2 gig of god knows who made it ram and had it all OC fine for a year. Then the board wnet bad during a move.

Since money was tight i replaced it with a cheap crappy asus p5vd2-vm se that offers ZERO oc or abilities whatsoever to tweak ANYTHING.

Now that money is fine....

Im all set on everything else....

Now for my questionish part.....

My proccessor was previously overclocked to a modest 3.0gig since the ram was crappy. didnt ever even mess with ram setting for that matter...

Now I KNOW that i can easily OC with this hardware to 3gig by simply increasing the FSB to 333 from stock 266. That would put me at 1333 FSB which is apparently the limit of this new MOBO? it says 1333+ in alot of places tho...website wise. That would also mean that my new ddr2 667 would be at a 1:1 ratio for FSB right?

SO just FSB increase to 333 would do that....what im trying to figure out now is how i can go even further.... And im assuming that this would involve adjusting my RAM speeds.... what I dont know, cant seem to find or figure out is HOW.. Meaning should I OC the ram to be faster and thus make the timings NOT 1:1? The cheap POS board im currently using till newegg delivers the MCI Platinum one wont allow me to play with any of this. I cnat even figure out how fast the ram is currently running and this pos doesnt support Dual channel either.

How does Dual channel affect Ram speed settings if at all?

Right now i THINK its running at 266 for the rated 1066 FSB of this mob and stock processor.

THe new board i would imagine would allow the ram to run at its Supported speed of 333/667 once i OC the FSB to 1333 if it doesnt just run the ram faster from the get go.

So bottom line is....CAN i and SHOULD i OC the ram...and if so....how much saftely.... i hear 400/800 is NOT hard or pushing it. but can i even do that?

IF not for whatever reason, ie mobo cant do it or its not reasonably safe, should i just attempt to push the FSB even higher? and hope theres no hole i have to push thru?

Im aware of coltage/cooling/locking pci freqs n such already, hence no mention of them.

AFAIK, the motherboards retail limit doesn't limit how high you can push the FSB.

My motherboards' limit is 1333FSB and I've had it up to 1920.

I'll have to look into it further. I'm not sure if it will work specifically with your motherboard or whether my terminology is wrong.

Someone will have to be more specific on this topic as I'm not too sure whether it varies through chipsets and different motherboards just like the CPU or whether it's a set limit.

However, that is generally how it works on my motherboard. I raise the FSB in accordance to the multiplier and clock speed I would like to achieve and it seems to work out fine. One thing to bear in mind is the FSB: DRAM ratio, this can be important when overclocking.

I'm pretty tired now and I can't think straight. I'll check this topic tomorrow and edit out anything which sounds a little bit off.

Ok...update.....the new MOBO in question should be here today! WOO.....

In the mean time ive been forum trolling and came across a forum that said this MOBO LOVES a 1:1 ram divider aka synced. SO.....

Now the question is....How fast do you think i can saftely push a e6600 on air...keep in mind tho that this room is pretty damn cold at all times. I had it previously at 3.2ghz from 2.6 with NO voltage changes at all on the old asus board and that was with REAL crappy ram. Id be happy with 3.4 -3.6 but i think that might require some voltage tweaks which ive always been for lack of a better word scared of messin with simply because my pockets arent as deep as they used to be. So if it DOES require some votage tweaks, should i just go about clocking for 3.4 and going up in voltage 1 step at a time until it posts?

I would put it up to 400FSB which is 3600MHz (I believe) and see how you go from there, I have a friend who has his clocked at 3.6GHz all the time on air.. no probs at all, what cooler are you using?

Ooh.. problem then LOL upgrade your CPU cooler as you need to push 1.45 - 1.5v through the chip to get it at 3600MHz.

If your case allows for it, go for the Arcting Cooling Freezer Xtreme! They're due to be bought out in the next couple of days.

Stock FSB raitings are merely for processors at stock speeds. You might want to send that memory back and get some PC6400 stuff, which should help you go further, but if it is too much hassle and you can live with a slightly lower clock, that's fine.

TBH, I doubt that you will be able to go past 3.2GHz without bumping the vCore up a lot more than you would expect. Keeping it at 3.2 will keep the voltages lower and the temperatures down. If you try 3.6GHz, you are only getting 400MHz more, yet you are going to have to push a lot more voltage through it.

Yeah, im gonna be content with 3.2....

i just did a super pi to 16 mill and my core temps never went above 43C tho....i really dont see heat being an issue =P

Heat DEF not being an issue tho, Id say i def have room to push it further...all the forums ive read say this ram can take 800 pretty easy. Just not sure if Ill get better speed from uppin FSB to 800 and OCing the ram, OR....tightening the timings on the ram instead.....

Any thoughts?

hey man, i hate to be the bad guy, but why the 750i? you do know that when you are in SLI you will be at 8x 8x for the graphics.. i would suggest the 680i if price is a concern, but the 790i has the best OC ability with keeping full bandwidth on the video.

just a thought.
