Overclocking i7 3820

Yes a 3930k is going to be faster at encoding but only seconds faster not minutes. If it is worth it to you to shave 10-20 seconds (sometimes less) off a a task and spend $300 to do it. More power to you.

I saved the $300 and spent it on a 7950 insted. But thats just me. Many people will want to stroke their ego and boast about having a 6 core and to them i say cool go for it.

But i tell you now i dont regret one bit getting the 3820 over the 3930..

yeah I think I'm on the fence because I know the 3820 is the CPU for me, but when I built my P4 machine I decided that the dual cores were just too much money for me at the time when I needed everthing esle for the build. This system held up good for many years, but recently the single core started to hold me back, so I found 2nd gen dual core CPU for $50, and with a BIOS upgrade my board was able to handle it. The switch wasn't as giant a leap as I thought, because I was going from a single core CPU with hyper-treading, to 2 full CPUs without. At that time , I think I did the right thing because to jump up in cores you had to loose hyper-threading, though the $50 CPU overclocks 12% higher (whats really keeping it in the game).

But now you don't have to give up hyperthreading to go up in cores, I think it's the cool factor of 12 threads that has me on the fence, maybe going with the 3930K.

$289 kinda pushes me back over to the 3820 side, but the money doesn't have as much weight in my decision as it did when I was younger. Like you said you bought a 7950 with the money you saved on the CPU, so really you didn't save nothing, because we are human and we spend until we have nothing left. Right now I don't need anything else other than CPU/motherboard/memory, so only real choice for me is weather to dish out the extra, for the coolness factor( +possable longer life before needeing an upgrade)

but nothing is pushing me hard enough one way or the other, I'm just stuck on the fence swaying back and fourth. If it was something other than a CPU, I would go with the all important "which ever one looks the best!!"

Well "coolness Factor" is about showing off you epenis and i would rather show off my ebrain lol. Sure i like to show off but show off things i create/mod not brag about having the best of the best.

especially when the best of the best is situational. Well eather way you go you are going to have a rig that will be up to the task. Good luck and have lots of fun with the build. I know i did.

OK two notches down on voltages 7 hours over night stable on Prime again ....and gonna see how low i can go ..with vcore

Kudos for overclocking a processor that's not "unlocked" and congratulations with your OC. Keep working untill it's stable enough for you =) Great post.

Hi again. Today i wanted to tinker around again to see if i could a better stable overclock. So the first thing i always do is open HWmonitor. Today when i opened HW monitor i noticed something and i am wondering if this is/will be a issue



Whe i looked at the voltages i noticed that my +12v is only 8.27v and on all the other rigs i have in my house and what i have seen from evry TTL video the +12v is always 12v+.

So is something wrong or is it just a glitch?

I'd have to say if you can afford and justify it then why not go for it

For me i could afford it, but not justify it hence why the 3820 was a god send!

that has to be a HW Monitor error, you got the same power suppy as me and you would have to be pulling over 70 Amp on your 12 volt rail for it to drop voltage like that.

If its not an error it would mean a bad connection or bad power supply, maybe check your 24/8 pin connector into your motherboard and see if any of the contacts show any signs of heating up

Thanks for checking. Well i no longer trust CPUID HWmonitor for anything. I went back to my wifes pc to take a look at her HWmonitor results and it shows all 4 cores temps at 0c and 14c under load lol now keep in mind this is a AMD 3870k but honestly. Then i was thinking. Well maybe its just a motherboard sensor issue so i drive over to my Moms house and check hers as she has the EXACT same motherboard and cpu

ASUS F1A75-V pro and a AMD 3870k and would you look at that 0c in HWmonitor for all 4 cores. Also keep in mind they both have the same crap stock cooler that comes with the cpu but still no way they can be at freezing. So yeah HWmonitor is a bit wonky

I have it at 4.5 at 1.328v

How many people have pushed this thing to 5ghz, i managed to get mine to 5 today at 1.44 vcore, 120 base clock and 42 on the multiplier. It survived intel burn test just fine. H100 for cooling.

I know this is a dead and gone thread, but just found this saved on my nas from when I first got my 3820. These chips get pretty volt hungry when you start going over 5Ghz. :lol:

I'm sure the voltage could have been refined a lot, but that's what it took to drag the CPU through cinebench.
