hi just joined and could some kind person give me some advice. i would like to over clock my q6600. not looking to over clock it a lot just a little bit , so that it is safe. my motherboard is an asus p5n32-e sli plus and have looked though the posts about over clocking the q6600 but all the setting i can't find in my bios. im new never over clocked before so forgive me. could someone let me know what the best setting are and where i'd find them in my bios to change them. please step by step like i said never done it before. also what programs do i use to test it out ?

thanks

That board is the bomb! Got it sitting on the side here.. :)

All the settings can be found in the "Extreme Tweaking" part of the bios.

Then into Overclocking for timings and CPU settings.

But remember to change AI tuning to Manual. ;)

You should be able to get a good overclock with that board. Have fun with it.

yes i have looked at that ,but my bois isn't like that. have tryed to change what i think is vcore to 1.2 and also 1.4 and changed what i think is fsb to 1333 but doesn't seem to do anything, except for my computer doesn't restart.i have to force a shut down and power back on. what program is best to test to see if it has changed ?

Well if you just look at System Infomation it will show your CPU speed.

The best program to look though the details is CPU-Z.

The board you have is a top notch board and has every overclocking option invented.

Have a look through the manual, shows you lots of imfomation about the bios.

ok been having a play around and the most i can get out of it without it not posting is 2.58. i can only change the fsb up to 1150 and have changed the core voltage to 1.3. my bois is the new 901 just updated as was getting the same with 805. any ideas ?

ok been doing a lot of reading. first off think i answered that question wrong. my ram divider is set on auto. well i have got some where now got it sitting at 2.7 what i have changed is fsb (qdr) to 1200, mem (ddr) to 800, memory timing to 5.5.5.15.2t and everything else is still on auto. i did hit 2.9 at one point by changing fsb to 1300 and memory to 800 but tryed 1350 and 800 and all went wrong. anything over 1200 now just stays on the post screen or will sit on a blank black screen if i can go into bios then it will crash. for all three i then i have to reset the clrtc to get out of it. i'm still learning so please bear with me ,first time trying to over clock anything. on the plus side my new 7950gx2 has come and really has pumped my 3d mark score up by over 5 times :)

680i chipset doesn't like quoad cores that much, the max I could get out of a 680i was around 3ghz. So try and aim for that.

Have a play around basically.. see if you can find that sweet spot. ;)

Hope you enjoy the high performance. :)

ok been playing around and now know that the max a can do is 1220 fsb and 800 mem. if i go over 1220 it wont post or will not boot up. is there anything else i can change just to get it from 2.745 to 3.0. everything else is still on auto. tem.seem nice and low as i do have 5 fans in all. 30c to 32c is the highest it goes

Well mate i can say the best thing you can do is get another motherboard if you want higher clocks. I've been playing the a 680i board and a Q6600 all weekend and the thing just wont go past 3.1ghz. Knew they were bad, but not THIS bad...

if you have it up to 3.1 what setting are you changing? i will be well pleased when i get it to 3.0. thats what my goal is and thats where i want to stop. i can't seem to get passed 2.7. did get it to 2.9 but it wont go there again.

it was as bout as basic settings change as you could get. None of the higher stuff made a difference.

Stock voltages bar ram which was at 2.0v. NB strap at 1333. 1333mhz fsb. unlinked with ram set to 800mhz, 5-5-5-15 2t.

ok i have done it 3.0 ghz. very easy, i wasn't doing anything wrong it was my bois that wouldn't let me go any higher. downgraded to 801 bois with settings 5.5.5.15.2t ,fsb 1333 and mem 667 everything else left on auto, should i start now to change the overvoltage ? i have changed vcore to 3.5 but it will not post with this so put it back to auto. i have taken a screen shot of cpu-z and everest are the temperatures ok ? as it has rised abit. what should i be looking for as in safe temperatures remembering at mo i am not doing anything with the computer so it will rasie more when i am. ok since starting to write this the computer has froze 3 times meaning i had to do a forced shut down, so this isn't stable any ideas ?

ok a bit more of an upadate. last night i thought i'd try another bois as i found it does make a differnets. so went on to asus site and found there was a new bois 1001 so used that. couldn't get the computer to boot up with this bios so thought i'd go back to 0801 bois. every thime i tryed to downgrade i got this message. downgraded rom file was not suitable for the system. i was up till 3am last night and had to get up at 6am for work  . yes sleeped in :nono: even tryed awdflash which wouldn't let me wipe the bois. ok so went i got home thought i'd look for an answer on the net. but found nothing about it. so had two choses one swap over the motherboard for the spare one i have or see if i can get the bois to work for me. i can't be bothered to change boards over at moment so tryed to get it to work for me. i did with a loads of problem but think i have my 3.0 ghz and running ok. the computer kept going to a black screen when i ran 3d mark03 so play with the voltages till now it dont. heres what i have done. fsb 1333 , mem 800 ,vcore 1.35 ,nb 1.45 ,sb 1.5 cpu ,vtt voltage 1.45. ,memory timing 5.5.5.15 2t. heres a screen shot as soon as 3d mark03 had finished see the temperatures they seem ok to me, what do you think are they ? it should be hotter after running this shouldn't it ? am i right ? and my 3d score has gone up a little to, but that was very good anyway. should i be thinking of changing anything else or running any other program to test it ?
