I intend to get one of these from a friend to go with my evga 133-K8-NF41-AX. Was wondering whats the max i'll be able to hit with the stock cooler and the CAB2E stepping. Will it be too optimistic to wish to join the 3ghz club?

im no expert on opterons but i know for sure you wont hit 3ghz on stock cooling. you might get a 200mhz overclock maximum.

plus i dont think evgas are really all that overclockable. plus thats evgas lowest model.

I'm going to say NO CHANCE.

The reason?

No motherboard, especially not an evga, is going to be able to go up to 375mhz FSB which would be required to get the Opty 144 (x8 multi) up to 3ghz.

The ATI motherboard reputedly can get to 400FSB but don't know if it can at that high multi

If you want to hit 3ghz then really you need a DFI Lanparty and a decent stepping 146 or one of the best 144 steppings.

I have probably the most wanted 146 stepping (146 0540 FPAW) and I just run mine at 2.85ghz , I could push it further but i dont like the temps.

Hmm i'll save the money then and go in for a 3000+ venice. I was considering the opty only to hit the magical 3.

Maybe i'll do that later when i get a lanparty and a good cooler.

Btw i think the venice shuld do 2.5 on stock cooler or am i being optimistic again?

yup still, if you can still get a venice 3000+ stock at 1.8ghz i doubt will very much go over 2ghz on stock cooling

I reckong 2.2GHz is reasonable on stock though you may be lucky

Doubt you'll get it a lot higher

You should be able to hit 2.2 on stock cooling with just about any mobo that has overclocking features. Does that board allow for any voltage controls?

^^ No idea will have to see when i get it. Its a rebaged jetway and i read its a good OC'er but u never know.

flash it with the jetway bios. however 3 ghz is a bit too optimistic. I would say at least 2.6 ghz is possible. CAB2E doesnt like the cold but works great on water/air cooling. But seriously , do not torture ur chip too much with heat. Get a better heatsink. There are many Cheap good heatsinks in the market. Coolermaster Hyper6 is one of them.

I'm in India and there are no heatsinks available here unfortunately. I intend to source one from the US later but till then i'll have to do with the stock one.
