Opinions on the newly announced Nintendo 2ds

As many of you know Nintendo have announced a soon to be released 3ds variant, the 2ds.

Being release on the 12th of October, the 2ds is designed as the name suggests to have no 3d functionality. Another difference is the slate-like design compared to the folding design of all other DS models.

At first many people considered this a joke, but i personally think it is a genius move.

The lack of 3d functionality makes it ideal for young users (age 7 and below), this is due to the 3ds' ability to damage the eyes of younger users. This allows Nintendo to more easily access this segment of the market and it's release on the same date as the next pokemon game will likely shift a lot of units.
I am also a fan of its slate design, i have had to fix several DS' which has had its screen or hinge broken by young children. Removing this weakness makes it much more child proof.

I'd like to know what you guys think of this, do you consider it a joke or do you think it is a good move.

It does look a bit retro. Big and uncomfortable to hold though?

Anyway, I think this is a brilliant move by Nintendo. Parents give their kids gadgets for their birthdays or holidays all the time. This is something the kids would want AND something the parents don't have to spend an awful lot of money on. Seems like a good deal to me.

First time I have seen this but I don't like the slate design looks, it looks..old?

I dislike it too but i appreciate that it is an improvement given its made for younger children. If i had children and was buying them a DS, i'd buy this one given how child friendly it is (also the fact its a B'tch to fix the hinge).

I guess it's a good idea for the youngens. I wish Nintendo was up at the top, I don't want them to fade away but I think they might do. :\

This is either a joke or a bad move by Nintendo in my opinion.

It is essentially a 3ds with no 3d (which the 3ds can do already) and no means to protect the screen and input controls.

I think if Nintendo were to release a firmware update allowing a parental lock to disable the 3d slider and force 2d, it would solve the problem.

That said if you look at Nintendo's hand held range from the DS onwards, its a really big money spinner

Won't fit in any pockets.. and the layout seems stretched, like, the shoulder buttons seem quite high in comparison to the main thumb stuff.

I'm afraid this is a side-step move more than a step forward for them...

Also, why didn't they just give it one bloody BIG screen instead of two small ones?! it's essentially just a tablet now right? It even has a tablet-esque home button ffs.

it actually has one single screen! it is just cut in two by the case.

I understand what you say about the hinges on the older design but I still think this fixed version is a bad idea.

With the folding one it provided a hard shell protective casing for the screens and buttons (shoulder buttons excluded)

They've made some epically bad decisions of late, this and the Wii U.

i do understand your point. For an older user the 2ds is a joke, to a parent of a young child this is the one to buy; its more robust, cheaper and doesn't have the potentially harmful 3d.

We simply are not the market for this device, though i do see a lot of people buying this for their children.

i think i wouldn't give my sub 7 year old that thing. call me conservative in that matter, but that isn't the age a kid should spend playing video games.

It certainly looks unique, and its a good idea making it 2D and solid for kids, but otherwise I think it looks like it would just feel weird to hold it

I know plenty of adults that use the older non-3D DS lite so adults are in the market area that this is aimed at. "Games" like Brain training etc.

Why not simply change the 3DS software so that parents can enable parental controls to disable the 3D functionality?

I don't believe it'll be anymore robust than the folding one. The common damage point will just shift from the hinges to things like the screens & buttons unless it comes with a hard-shell casing for storage.

Genius from Nintendo. Top of the Christmas list this year is next-gen consoles, so what can Nintendo do to get a piece of the season-pie? Release a cheap version of the 3DS at an affordable price point.

With that, comes new cases for the 2DS and new accessories. As mentioned, 3DS was always played in 2D anyway (3D switched off).

Quality marketing from Nintendo and it'll do well, especially as the games are compatible with the DS range.
