This Titan X has started doing my head in. It really has. I went off to buy a 1080Ti Hybrid kit.

But you try finding one ! They are sold out the world over :( I went to Alphacool and looked at their GPU kits but again, "Awaiting stock" so even the expensive option was a non option FFS. I looked at the Arctic.

But my dead nan (god rest her soul) could do a better job. Why would you force the removal of the entire cooler then replace the lovely Nvidia backplate with that rubbish? it looks horrid and costs £120.

OK, so a few guys have mounted regular Hybrids onto the 1080Ti and it looks like this.

That is the look I am going for. I have now purchased a 1080Ti stock cooler complete.

But there is a problem. I can not mount any AIO onto the core (unless it's a Hybrid of sorts) because the VRM plate gets in the way. What I mean is when you try to mount a regular AIO using a home made bracket the cold plate on the AIO will not touch the core. It is because of this area here.

So, you can either bodge it and leg it and use a shim (and hit over 65c easily) or you can buy another cooler and cut up the cold plate. Obviously I am not taking a Dremel anywhere near my Titan X cooler, so that's why I just bought a 1080Ti stock cooler for £35 inc. I will then mod the mid plate so that an AIO can mount firmly onto the core with no shim, keeping my Titan X parts intact.

This is where my good friend Gareth comes in. He will be making me the adapter to hold the cooler on. Not decided on a cooler yet, but will need a round one. He will be reading this thread, so dude, we have a couple of options.

We can make something that looks like this.

Or we can make something that looks like this.

That goes over the top of the pump and pulls it on that way. Obviously it wouldn't be as secure..

FAO Gareth - I have a AM4 retention mech here you can use for the measurements of the pump etc. I will pop that in the post ASAP !

Cooler ordered for £39. Current total = £74.

Basically it has retention bars that slot in and screw inlike this.

So I would propose we need something like this...

That is scale drawn. I have used the OD of a Asetek pump (68mm) and 60mm spacing holes. However, because the actual OD of the pump with the straight parts is unknown I have just thrown a guess at those parts. They are angled up to clear the hoses at the top.

Challenge accepted!
"He will be trying to make me the adapter to hold the cooler".
The design by committee process has begun! ;-)

The donor cooler arrived. I sized it up with an Asetek bracket.

Gulp. I hope mine isn't that big (lol)

It's slightly different to the one in the review, for the better IMO. It doesn't have that Tachometer thing that has red LED, just a small logo, and it has two screw points instead of one. It's also a great size.

Note - not accurate, just a test size up. It's all gone off to Gareth now for machining and bracket making :)

Cool little project!

Yeah very important tbh. I noticed tonight the card feels like it is throttling. The drops to mid 40s in Fallout 4 seem to coincide with the fan going nuts, so yeah I think it's throttling pretty badly.

I don't think it's solely the game tbh. I have only seen it drop from a totally jammed 60 FPS about three times, and each time the rig sounded like a wind farm. I think the GPU throttles when there is a lot to do (because by fair means or foul Fallout 4 is pretty massive at times) and it's causing the FPS drop.

I will find out once the AIO is on there, as that should remove any thermal limitation :)

Nice! Looking forward to temp testing, but that won't help FO4 I'm betting. My GPUs never throttle and FO4 can still FPS drop into unplayable levels. Especially around downtown.

Yeah but you don't have a Titan XP on air do you?

What I am saying is that when I walk into built up areas the GPU fan goes nuts and the FPS drop into the 40s. I am pretty confident the card is throttling, especially as I have it overclocked too.

No sir. Oh don't get me wrong, I don't doubt your throttling. My only point was your FPS drops might not be solved be eliminating the throttling. Hopefully you'll be able to reduce it with the AIO. If I fast travel into the downtown Boston core, I'll see serious FPS drops too, even with both cards being about 88% utilized. Irony: a bug filled Bethesda game that appears to scale well in SLI. :D
