On Modular PSU cables...

Someone recently asked me if it was safe to re-use modular PSU cables as in "I'm getting a new PSU of a different brand, make, and power output. Is it perfectly OK to just remove the cables from my PSU (and leave them in to my other components) and just connect the cables to my new PSU?"

I'm not lazy, so I'd never do it, but can someone tell me if it's "Safe" ?

In some cases you may be ok,

I looked into this recently as I have a full custom build with sleeving etc and I recently had to replace my primary psu.

Thought I best check first as I was thinking of using the cables friom the previous psu HX1000 and upgrading to an AX 1200, well bloody good thing I did as the cable pinouts are very different and the cables are not compatible at all

(the AX 1200 is single rail and the previous psu is dual I guess thats the difference in my case anyway)

I then went onto the corsair forums and read a story where a guy just swapped psus and toasted his ssd raid array.

In short there are probably many cables that are ok but if in a any doubt my advice would be to always use the cables supplied with the unit.

Not safe at all. Different types of PSU's have different types of modular connections, use the cables that are provided.

I was going to say it might be ok if using the same brand but from what fmsam said you can't even assume same brand modular psu's are the same pinout, same range of psu's maybe? Either way it sounds like it could be a receipe for disaster to me if he does it.
