On-board Audio issure

Had a 5670 in my rig then jumped ship and got a great 460. Ok, so after I installed my 460, the drivers and everything else, my on-board audio quit working. really strange to me. and i have read of it happening to other people. oh yeah, mobo is Sabertooth x58. So I threw my old Fatal1ty Pro in the PCI slot. Its not that big of a deal at the moment, but I plan to throw another graphics card in, and it will cover up my only PCI slot on the board. with one card its not a problem, i can just put the graphics card in the lower PCIe slot. However when my other card gets here, I either will not have audio, or no SLI. Cant really afford another audio card right now, so i would like to run my SLI and on-board audio. anyone familer with this problem? I have tried different drivers, and a whole mess of other stuff. even formatted and reinstalled windows, but no luck.

When you installed the nvidia drivers did you install the nvida sound drivers as well? try installing only graphics drivers then reinstalling onboard sound drivers, and ensure onboard sound is enabled in the bios

This happens with ATI drivers as well, they will install the HD audio drivers and disable the Realtech ones. If you go into Device Manager>Sound video and game controllers and then right click on the Nvidia sound drivers and click disable it should switch back to on board, you may also have to restart before it will work.

Well tried those ideas. no luck. yes taurus I have cleaned the drive of all old drivers. even formatted and reinstalled windows one time to see if that would work, no luck though. guess I will have to go and look at a new audio card that can be used in the PCIe 1x slot. thanks for the ideas.

Similar issue here, I will explain in detail everything I found.

First problem was that I realised I forgot to remove the protective plastics of my top GTX 460 so I powered down the rig but left the PSU plugged in and set about removing the card and the plastic stuff. Re-fitted the card and booted the system, 10mins later in a game of Medal of Honor the system blue screens and reboots with no audio from front or rear panels.

I completely removed drivers and reinstalled them to no avail so I formatted, once again to no avail.

Having read up a little further it seems in some cases the onboard audio controller fries itself and the only solutions are to either send it back if it is still covered by warranty or get a PCI sound card. The PCI sound card sounded like a good idea at first but I quickly became aware it was not a solution when you have 2 graphics cards in SLI on the Asus Sabertooth x58 board.

Fortunately for me mine is still covered under the warranty and the retailer is giving me a replacement without much issue though I can't help but think the damage was caused by me because I still had the PSU plugged in and ultimately power still through the board in part.

Wow, Nvidia messed up somewhere if 460s are causing this to happen.

Not even sure it would be nVidia's fault if I am honest, at this point in time I am blaming myself for adding and removing the top card whilst power was still hooked up to the PSU rather than being completely removed.

I have also seen some people claim that the heat between the two cards was enough to fry the controller but I don't know where the audio chip(s) are on the Sabertooth x58 so I will not add to speculation. Instead I will wait and see what the retailer says if they even check the board before shipping it back to Asus.

Unfortunately you can not add a PCI card if you are running 2 GTX 460's. Furthermore if something on the board fails surely it is best to get it returned and fixed/exchanged rather than throwing more money at something that will only bypass rather than fix a problem.

That sounds like a likely cause, I was just going off the fact that it seems to be a common problem with 460s.
