Hi, as you can see I'm new here. I have been watching Tom's videos on youtube for a while now, but it was only yesterday that i actually decided to setup a new rig. So i thought, what better place than here? I have been doing alot of reading on the forums the whole day and i was very impressed by the amount of people who know lots and help too. So I'm happy to be here. Well enough of the chit-chat. Lets get down to the real topic.

I put together my last rig about 6 years ago and to be honest it worked well till my PSU blow up and burnt all the rest of the stuff with it.

I'm looking to put together an overclockable rig. To be honest I'm not thinking of overclocking right now but as time passes it will get slower and ill feel the need. That is the same mentality i used with the last one and i got 5-6 years of gameplay out of it. I know that in the long run ill have to down the details on the graphics in some games but you cant win em all. So here is what I'm thinking.

Budget: Can change. If i feel that its really worth it ill go up.

Mobo: Rampage III Extreme

CPU: Intel i7 950 (can always upgrade later)

RAM: 8GB(not sure what make and model)

HDD: Western Digital VelociRaptor 600GB for main drive

Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB for Storing other media(photos, videos, music etc.)

CPU Cooling: Noctua D14

GPU: Anything that would probably play Star Wars: The Old Republic(MMO)

Audio: Onboard. I use Headsets so wont really need anything that good.

Yes i play MMOs. I do a bit of 3D animation too( not a pro ). Let me know what you think. The only thing I'm sure of is that you guys will show me the way! Thanks in advance.
 
Ohhh you're getting ready for ToR eh? I can't wait. Yes I agree with thestepster, I would seriously consider a sandy bridge build with maybe the i5 2500k
 
Firstly, Welcome to the family!

In my eyes that looks like some good kit there though as the guys say, SB may be worth a look for sure.

As for motherboards for that the Giagbyte GA-P67-UD7 Tom just reviewed is one of the best boards he's ever had the pleasure of testing if you can afford the pricetag.

Have you thought of what psu you want? I'd say Corsair or NZXT probably.

As for the GPU if you don't mind holding off until the end of the month, I'd look at the GTX560 when it comes out before deciding as predictions say it should be a bit of a pocket rocket for a relatively small pricetag.

Thanks from the welcoming. Yes im going Corsair for the PSU. As for the GPU, id have to look up prices but ill will now check out the GTX560.

60gb SSD

2 x 1tb Samsung F3
 
ok well if u can get a 570 mate if not just run 2 768's 460's in sli they perform amazing and match/little bit less power than a 480/570 for much cheaper
 
Im feeling the Samsung HDD. Not too sure ill be using SLi at the moment. That Gigabyte p67 UD7 nearly gave me a heart attack. It looks amazing and can do loads too. How does it match upto the Maximus IV? (probaly can afford the MEIV)
 
If you don't need the extra pcie lanes, I would just look for a midrange p67 board, like a ud4 or ud5. Save the extra money and dump it into a good gpu, since you just want to run a single card anyway.
 
the ud7 is the best p67 board out fact, go read toms review on it, i want one bad and will be selling my current set up to fund me gettin one

well if ur unsure of sli mate get a 570 then
 
Ok after reading your replies i have come up with this list. I was looking forward to a Rapage III Extreme but the Sandy Bridge has won the race.

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD7

CPU: i5 2500k

RAM: 6GB DDR3 Mushkin Redline Ridgeback Kit

HDD: Western Digital VelociRaptor 2 x 600GB RAID 0

CPU Cooling: Noctua D14 (I live in Cyprus now and its hot here. Please let me know about your ideas for Water Cooling)

GPU: GTX 570

Audio: Onboard

PSU: Corsair (what wattage would i need for future SLi?)

and would a gaming lan card do wonders or is it just a way to make you pay more?
 
i7 950 = LGA 1366 = Triple channel = 3 or 6 RAM modules - I like the Gigabyte X58A-UD3R.

i5 2500K = LGA 1155 = Dual channel = 2 or 4 RAM modules - I like the Gigabyte P67A-UD4.

Either platform is a good choice right now, both eminently overclockable.

750W will give plenty of "future-proofing". Don't cheap out on a power supply, they're important.

The only item that sticks out is the (pair of?) Velociraptors in RAID 0. I'm guessing these are for a specific need? RAID a couple of WD Caviar Blacks if you need redundancy and if you need speed you still would have 2/3 of your storage budget left for a massive SSD for OS and programs.

Opinion on LAN cards is mixed, but I don't think anyone outside of manufacturers is saying they do wonders.

After reading your reply i thought id go back to the drawing board. I looked HERE . But to be honest i got lost. Ive looked around the net but cant seem to find anything that says something like "***** RAM are the best for UD7". Id hate to pay out for RAM and then end up having to put them aside and buy another set.

About having an SSD, World of Warcraft alone is over 30GB. So id have to get a big one and the price tag stings a bit.
 
muskin redline ridgeback mate fast as hell ram mate beats corsair dominators at 1600 and 2000

as regards to an SSD mate thatsd just ur main install and a few aps games dont really load much faster so buy something like a 1tb sammy f3 and put ur games onto that and there ya go

And what about the Antec LanBoy Air? Although it is very dusty here in Cyprus. I was also looking at the Cosmos.

I think, having lived in Cyprus before that the less ways of dust getting into your system the better, the Antec lanboy looks like a massive NO! but then again if you buy an air compressor and clean it every day you will have no dramas. I would go with the phantom
