Old Builder New Build

Well Antec say that if you out fans in all the fan slots the pressure inside the case pushs the dust out through the mesh panels, but dont know how well that works. the Phantom look great and is a good case but then the lanboy looks funky too. I suppose it the Phantom is probably the better of the both though.

oh and how is the PSU on the phantom? i was thinking Corsair.

The trouble with that though, is that unless you run the fans at lower rpm (and therefore lower pressure) it'll be like sitting next to a jet engine!

Well first off Positive Pressure does end up pushing air out through mesh and gaps, and on an open rig like the Lan Boy I doubt you'll get any dead zones, but the case looks like something a 4 year old plays around with in a sandbox.

With the phantom and getting a PSU really depends on the colour, if you're getting a white one, NZXT HALE90 all the way, white psu + white case = white stuff. Black case, than Corsair would be a safe bet, I would probably opt for a ~850W PSU personally for future SLI, updatability,. If a red phantom I think you need to be hit on a head until you buy a white one.

I only mentioned the RAM because they stick out in the proposed specs you posted:

Mobo: Rampage III Extreme

CPU: Intel i7 950 (can always upgrade later)

RAM: 8GB(not sure what make and model)

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD7

CPU: i5 2500k

RAM: 6GB DDR3 Mushkin Redline Ridgeback Kit

In the case of i7 950, I'd suggest 6Gb (3 sticks of 2GB) and in the case of i5 2500K you might get either 4GB (2 sticks of 2Gb) or 8Gb (2 X 4GB or 4 x 2GB. Generally 4Gb is plenty but if you plan to use over 4Gb you'll also need to use a 64-bit version of Windows to recognize it.

That being said, by sticking to quality brands in mobos and RAM, there's very little chance of incompatibility, even if the specific modules you purchase don't appear on the motherboard's Qualified Vendor List. They just don't have time to specifically test every product on every mobo so QVL's aren't the final word, even if they are kept up to date. (My Patriot RAM isn't on the GA-X58A-UD5's QVL, but work better than amazing.) Something with similar specs (# pins, memory size, speed and timings) should operate similarly.

Once you've settled on a platform, I'm sure you'll be inundated with very specific and appropriate RAM choices.

Cheers for all the ace feedback. Im going with the 2nd setup i5 2500k. I think im going phantom black because i want the corsair psu. Nothing more annoying than uber fan noise. I hope to be able to get pic or maybe a video up as soon as i get it together. Thanks again to everyone for the great advice!

Sorry to bring back an old topic to the boards but i found a guy who wants to seller his 3-4 month old Thermaltake Level 10. I know its probably not the ideal gamer case but would the Noctua D14 fit inside it? He lives too far for me to go test it out so i thought someone might know a thing or two about these cases. He is selling it for the equivalent of about 250 quid. To be honest im am realy hoping that i hear good things from you guys. Thanks in advance and again i apologise for bringing this post back to the front page.

That's cool, I'm expecting pictures of your new build in this thread.

Thermaltake doesn't recommend a cooler above 150mm for the Level 10 and the D14 is 160mm. It might be made to fit by changing the orientation and/or removing a fan, but at what point is it still a D14? Your Level 10 will probably also lean slightly from the perpendicular with the weight too.

No case is worth what the Level 10 costs new, and even for used one, you'd have to really, really like the look to spend that kind of coin on a case. If I haven't dissuaded you enough, ask yourself the following question:

Is this a good automobile?

Also, if you're still considering Sandy Bridge that's what I'd be Googling. Intel reported today that Sandy Bridge chips spontaneously combust and spew noxious fumes that make your penis fall off or something. (If you already bought the parts, I'm kidding.)

So ill take that as a no for lvl10. Hehehe. Cheers again. Just need to rack up the last few quid i need for the build and we got ourselves a rigorama!
