Considering they are the same driver set would it be safe to just swap out the cards or should I do a clean wipe of the drivers beforehand ?
Any info is appreciated :)

Yeah Id want a clean install as well. Theyre different cards with different architecture. Id want to have a clean fresh set of drivers in there running them, including a Driver Sweeper run (NOT Driver Fusion) in Safe Mode to make sure everything is nice and fresh.

Don't need driver sweeper. Just manually delete it and presto! Then install new ones. But i would recommend downloading new drivers first and drag to your desktop before deleting. The screen gets small so it will be easier to find. Oh and after delete i would restart... I'm sure you know this but just reminding.

Yeah you probably haven't "needed" Driver Sweeper since XP but it helps my OCD to run it when Im doing a new driver install like this. LOL

I would delete and reload. There may be specific files loaded for the 780 which are not the same as used for the 680. They may work, but you may not get optimal performance from them.

plug and play..

if the control panel alerts new update, then opt for clean install. they use the
same driver packet. will detect on startup.
i went from 680 to 480 to 560ti then back to 660ti and did not do a thing. fully
functional and the NVidia control console detected and worked flawlessly. single
monitor.

I'd say it'll work okay, although you'd probably be better off you did the clean install just to be safe.

I remember a few years ago cloning my laptops hard drive and plopping the exact same OS install into my desktop. Granted it was a Linux OS, but the graphics drivers performed as they should. nVidia's Linux and Windows drivers are pretty much identical so it'll probably be the same.

The laptop has 8600M GT and the desktop was an 8800GTS.

I upgraded from a 680 to a 780 the other day. Had 320.18 installed with my 680, and when I booted up with my 780 installed I had to reinstall the drivers anyway since Nvidia Control panel disappeared, and so did everything else driver related.

What I normally do is switch cards then just run the driver installer, ticking clean install.
Simple as hell, and has never failed me :)
