Odd HDD issue

Right, I have a p5kc mobo with an awful (imo) jmicron controller.

I dont have any SATA drives so using PATA.

When I done my fresh XP install, all went fine. However, when using Installing from Virtual cd/dvd drives (magic iso, daemon tools both tried), it would hang after approx 1.5-2GB into the install. This would happen with multiple games too.

It was driving me roudn the bend, I tried various jmicron drivers with no success.

So I plugged in my Promise Ultra100 IDE card, and voila, no issues, XP blazing fast at loading, games installing as quick as they could. Brill.

Now im using an 80GB boot drive, and had planned to add in a 300GB drive I have spare as a data drive.

Now, it works, faultlessly, however boot time has doubled, and transfers are quite slow. I dont understand how boot time would double, as at the mo there's nothing on the drive.

So I figured my card doesnt like it, so plugged in the 300GB to the jmicron controller, and I have the same issue. With the drive plugged in, boot time doubles and is noticeably slower.

Can anyone think what could be causing this? Bearing in mind that both drives are now on seperate controllers?

I'm on the virge of throwing this mobo in the bin, what with this and the 95% failed post issue!

Why didnt they use an intel HDD controller

Check what mode the harddisks are running in while using the onboard controller.

If they run in PIO.. then you will be getting some issues with performance.

Make sure they are running in UDMA. ;)

Yeah checked all that dont worry :) it's not a DMA issue (at least that I can tell, presuming it's not fibbing!)
