the story of G92:

8800GT -> 9800GT -> GTS250

its like they dont even bother creating new chips anymore, very disapointing.

Just rename it and away we go selling it again.

Most likely its gonna be renamed to GT320 in 6 months time.

so.. they are releasing a new card, from 2007. Nice

Lazy gits! Make a new toy! That G92 must be getting tired by now

Don't really see all the fuss tbh, unless they put £100 on top of the price of the old cards.

It's a new naming convention, it'll have a new box, newer bios, new cooler, perhaps even some improvements of design faults that no1 is interested in.

Sure it's new. Today u can't get one, when it's launched u can.

By this time, it'd be obvious by looking at all the 2xx series cards by number how they perform in relation to each other. Leaving old style names on cards u still make and sell adds confusion to the whole thing. Now u`ll see 2x0 and now what to expect.

I'd expect them to be sub £50 more expensive than 9800GTX+ for the first month or so, then settle down. That's always been the case with nVidia products.

I do admire how Expreview post the article in a TheInquirer fashion as if the company are doing underhanded stuff.

But, GTX 285 and 295 confuse things

I think it would be a better naming system to call it 8800gt version 1, 2, 3 and so on

The newest version having a better cooler etc which is essentially what they are doing now only confusing things

I might go ATI again if nVidia keep pulling this one

I think that the marketing spinners are mostly to blame. I agree with Rast in that it makes sense to bring the name of the card in line with the current range so that the less educated know where it sits within the xxxGTX lineup.

However, what really puts NV into hot water is when they pass this new name over to the 'marketing department' who add so much BS to the press release that it seems like NV are releasing a new whizbang card with this, that and the other features.

If NV just came straight out and said "We're renaming the 8800GT to GTX250 to make it easier for people to understand. No its not new, no you shouldn't go out and buy it if you already have xxx card already", then I think people would be MUCH more accepting.

But that goes against the overcomplicated naming policy which is in fact a fiendish plan to take advantage of anyone who doesn't get it (i.e. nearly everyone).

Haven't seen an official press release for the 250 myself. Be nice to see it if any has linkies.
