Nvidia And AMD Accused Of Price Hiking

Nvidia an AMD are currently embroiled in an antitrust class action suit which alleges that they sold graphics processing units and cards to artificially inflated levels. Do we pay too much for the latest in 'pixel pushers', or are you content in forking out whatever the manufacturer demands. Feeling cheated? Feel free to voice your opinion here...

It almost goes without saying that we get taken for a ride when it comes to GPU pricing.

Take the jump from the X1900XT to the X1900XT-X - a 25mhz core increase and a massive price increase to boot.

I agree they are very expensive but if you compare it to CPUs they start to look like a bargain imo. Look at the FX and EE chips often double the price for only an unlocked multi.

The cost of a one off chip and pcb is massive but once they go into mass production the value of them takes one big fat nosedive, and its not like every new card coming out is a total re-design. The technology that has gone into say a 6200 is not THAT different to a 7800 in terms of production methods but i wouldnt bat an eyelid if someone threw a 6200 out the window of a moving car (those cards may not be the best examples) which just shows that we are not paying for anything actually physically worth it

Gpu prices hvae gone of the charts in recent years.. :(

It because of all us Benchers and gamers demanding them so PRICES GO BOOM!

Yeah but the majority of people that buy top end cards don't have to worry about the price. Thankfully for the rest of us that do have to worry about money there's the joy of overclocking the s**t out of something and there are forums like this one to celebrate that fact. OC3D and overclocking ftw!

I agree.. £400 for the 8800GTX, I could get a half decent Pc for that!

I am sure there are more 8800GTSs sold then GTX.. :p

Supply and demand... they got the supply and demand the amount we pay.

If people think its too much, then don't buy it. People are buying it, so apparently it isn't too much. Do I wish 8800GTX's were cheaper? HELL YES, but I learned long ago that wishes don't come true. Being a capitalist, this 'antitrust' lawsuit is BS, nVidia and AMD can charge as little or as much as they want, they aren't holding a gun to our heads and saying,"Buy it or die." The fact is WE WANT THE BEST OUT THERE, so we pay for it, or at least the best we can afford. If you think about it, mobos are getting pretty darn expensive, when I first got into building pc's they seemed cheap... now it's a minimum $200 for a butt-stompin' mobo, and $400 for an ASUS Striker (which is ridiculous, but they keep selling out... ) PSU's and RAM are getting more expensive, and as soon as HDD's start getting faster instead of just packing more GB's, they'll jump in price as well.

This post is an amalgam of all the posts before, but this last line is why most of us are here: For those of us that can find cheap and overclock the **** out of it, we're the real winners.:D ;)

PS: If you can find a gaming rig for $600, I'm a fat toothless fairy. (Actually, I'm 6'4", 210lbs, blond haired, blue eyed, work out at the gym, and hung like an elephant.) A good gaming rig runs above $1500, anything less is a pretender or productivity pc. (This is, of course, my opinion and subject to ridicule and blatant tomato warfare.)

tell me you wouldn't shag Fairuza Balk...

(Is it me or does she kinda look like a young Chrissie Hynde?)

.....? Its you :o

Ohhh... Ill tell you what shes HOT! (just googled it)

Every pic is nice apart from that on you have... :D

No, no, no... that's not me. I'd have to put a picture of Dolph Lundgren from Rocky IV, you know, Ivan Drago. (Okay, that's really pushing it, but I'm working on it...)

I do get the high flat-top pretty well, provided I find a decent barber...

I certainly agree with you TJS at least in America it is a free market, and AMD and Nvidia can decide that they want to hold back supply and that is their prerogative. Also how can you decide on a fair price for virtually any computer part?

The old fashioned way... price equals cost to build + profit, then supply and demand.

Stick with capitalism and it all works out. Start messing with collectivism and then you'll get arbitrary prices that really screw with consumers as well as manufacturers, and then no one wins. (If America ever goes full-blown collectivist, I'll be the first glow-in-the-dark aborigine livin' in the Outback:mad: )
