Nvidia 8800 Gt

Could u give me a step by step careful instructions on how to OVerclock the 8800 GT.

Is it like moving the core meter all the way?? or like increasing it in small amounts or what???? WILL the card die??? much sooner if i overclock

BTW: AGAIn no aftermarket coolers just 2 80mm fans on the side panel and the stock cooler on the GFX card itself....

the general method for oc-ing is:

-do it in small steps, a few MHz at a time

-only change one thing at a time

-watch your temps

-test your OC (3dmark06, or your favorite game) and look for glitches (artifacts) in the graphics. When your settings start to become unstable you'll see artifacts

for an 8800gt you'll need a psu with 18+ amps on the 12v rail (or all the 12v rails together add up to 18 or more). 450W is the recommended minimum.

I wouldn't be surprised if the temperature is the limiting factor in your overclock.

Seems like the card normally runs somewhere in the 80-90C range, so as long as you keep your temps below that you shouldn't have to worry much about a decrease in lifespan

if you don't have it already, rivatuner is what I'd use to do the OC.

My Asus 8800GT memory is fine at 1000mhz (default 900mhz) although i do have the big glacier fan effort.I wouldnt push it more than 1000 tbh.

Yep I can`t go over 1000 realisticly. Somedays 995 has to do.

OH PLEASE CLEAR THIS UP!!

my mobo does not have the six pin thinge to connect the card so i used that pci-e to molex connector but that cable has two molex connectors on one end so what should i do???????????????? Connect only one????

If so why the Hell give two???

Cheers

IIRC you have to connect both of the molex to use the 1, 6-pin pci-e

the manual for the card probably has that information in it

Guys

You guys talk about some stuff called 12v rail and stuff????

Listen if i went to a shop and asked for a 500W PSu for the card thats enough right???

or do i need to ask him some specifications??? like that 12V rail and stuff

Anyway please explain what it means and is it neccessary??

there are 3 main points of concern when getting a psu:

-wattage

-amperage

-connectors

all 3 are necessary

the 8800gt should have a 450W minimum psu (product specs).

the psu is split into rails.

The typical setup is something like:

1 +3.3v rail

1 +5v rail

1 +12v rail

1 -12v rail

1 +5vsb rail

but 2, 3 and 4 +12v rails are pretty common as well these days.

the graphics card draws power from one +12v rail (even if you have 2,3 or 4 rails)

...so your psu needs enough juice to power it.

You should have at least 18amps on the 12v rail(s)

(after doing more reading, the amperages of individual 12v rails will not add up together...so if you have 2 rails @ 10A and 8A, they will probably not add up to 18A)

for connectors, just make sure that the psu has enough molex connectors to power all of your cd/dvd drives and hard disks, a 20+4 connector for the motherboard (that way you can't go wrong), a 4 or 8-pin connector for the cpu, and a 6-pin pci-e connector

The wattage is pretty much always plastered on the front of the box, so you don't really need to ask about it (unless you want efficiency and operating temps)

Ask about the amperage on each rail

Ask about the connectors

2) i have a 300 W power supply .. please tell me the recommended amount (only 1 card no SLI) and oh i will be playing games like CRYSIS,COD 4, BIOSHOCK,FEAR, all the big guns.....

What are your options for power supplies where you are?

Here some good power Supplies are Silverstone, FSP, Corsair, Seasonic and PC Power & Cooling. If you get a GOOD quality PS anything in the 400-500watt range is fine to use with a GT.

PS: good explanation Allargando

Thanks a lot allargando

SO now i got it clear A Psu that has

1)500W power

2)18A with 12v rail

2) lots of molex connectors

(a six pin one isn't necessary right?? cuz i have a pci-e to molex wire thing.. which came with the card so i have to connect both yeah now i am clear)

THANKS MAN!!!!!

you don't absolutely need a 6-pin pci-e, but the use of the molex to pci-e connector seems to be discouraged (can't find many details on why atm)

depends on what you're looking at.

Ultra makes a decent psu imo. The x-finity that I have powers my 1950pro, dead silent too.

NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!

(no Ultras, ESPECIALLY the 500s)

Here is a shot of the inside the 500 (notice the 3 wires soldered to 1 for the GPUs)

You are VERY lucky it works on your comp.

Some old components going on there, and nicely squashed in and soldered.

I have found not all psus ship enough power through their pcie for certain cards. Quality and cheap ones.

Whether it`s one or the other designing things out of spec I dunno.
