NV Silencer 5 dropped temps and noise

For my geforce 6800 card i opted to go with aftermarket cooling because under load the stock cooler sounded like a helicopter. Stock kept temps around 58degrees celcius gpu and 38 ambient temperature; with stock cooling and overclocking on the gpu i was able to hit over 90 degrees celcius on the gpu, now thats too hot for comfort even though the limit is 127 degrees celcius (27 degrees hotter than boiling water). I slapped on a Artic Cooling NV Silencer 5 for 6800 gpus with the provided generic white paste and it dropped my temps to 48 degrees idle on the gpu and never over 60 on load and most importantly its silent.

Yeah I'mthinking about going with a NV5 - there good coolers. Seeing as I've already voided the BFG lifetime warranty on my vid card my soft OC'ing it - I might as well! :D

Yeah i have the NV Cooler too, it keeps heat reduced and pumps out hot air through vent at back as per the dual slot solutions, only problem is its a tight fit in an asus a8n sli deluxe as the northbridge fan is about 2mm away from the cooler.

These are excellent long lasting cheap awesome solutions to nvidia's cement grinder stock fanstfor $25-35 US. I'd recommend it to anyone that needs a replacement.

I have heard that the NV5 is quite an effective cooler, and very quiet. They are a bit large for my taste, and peeps used to complain that the Nvidia reference heatsinks on the GF 5800 and 5950 were large :D There are plenty of other VGA cooling options available from Vantec, Zalman....just to name a couple.

Wow, thats really hot for a vanilla 6800, what are your case temps??? I have a 6800GT and oc'ed, mine has never even gotten anywhere near that!!!! The temps you gave after the NV5 mod, idle-48 deg C and load-60 deg C...my GT idles 2 deg lower than yours and after gaming has only reached 58 deg C. I would be checking my positive case pressure, to ensure sufficient cooling of your total system as a word of advice also. Good Luck

Yeh know, you really don't screw yer warranty over by oc/ing or unlocking pipes. as long as you lock the pipes & shader and put it @ stock when you send it back they never know

Sometime they'll end up thinking of logs stored in a tiny EEPROM... what could be worse...

They say big fans at low RPM get better cooling and reduced noise levels, is it possible to fashion a sick form of heatsink from a large 110mm casefan, duct tape and bits of plastic?

yeah really me two except

i put the same thing on my 6800 and it went really silent except for my star ice 775 cooler i click on oc guru and work my 3.8 to 3.975 mhz and my fan goes like a turbine engine and counters all the nice quiet coolers on my sys..........

i currently have the stock cooler which is quite gr8 but iv removed the stock fans and installed a vantec spectrum pci card cooler and reduced temps about 2 degrees idll and 5 degrees load and it currently runs 47 degrees idle and 65 degrees load.

and it looks very gr8.

btw my 6800gt is working at Ultra Speeds :D

yea i use one of their ati silencers which allowed me to oc by bout 25%

HINT: use Arctic Silver 5 instaed of the shit they give u cause it will eventually (after it 'cures' - this takes bout 200 hrs of off/on usage) give u about and extra 15MHZ (it did in my case)

I'm using an NV5.. Idles at 47C, load at 64C.

Overclocked to Ultra Extreme speeds :)

yeah but u had an ultra to start with ya shiester :) hehe

once i get water on this GT i'm gonna see if I can get it to Ultra Extreme speeds even with the tighter mem timings, w00t!
