Sounds like you have a gold mine for a garage!...1300W PSU is that it was a spare one sitting in the garage.
I have been told my CPU temps are very high.
Load temps are around 60C with ambient being around 26C+
Would adding a 120 rad to the roof after the CPU help?
Don't know what voltage you're running on (have scoured the thread but couldn't
find the info), but 60 degs does not seem that high on load to be honest, especially
on 26 + ambient. I would be quite happy with those temps (again, depending on
voltage). But then again, I'm a guy who would rather have slightly higher temps
with a lot more silence, so your priorities might differ in that regard.
Personally, when I was running F@H on my 2600k @ 1.38-something V I always had
~ 68 to 74 deg, depending on ambient. Never had a single problem, and the CPUs
are specified for quite a bit higher. I would have liked to be ~65, but since I did
not have any problems I just left it as it was.
An additional 120 would just make the loop look all messy imo, without bringing all
that much benefit (sure it will get you some improvement, but not enough to really
justify all the additional ugliness imo).
This build looks awesome, the lighting, coolant... It is just perfect, almost. Could have done with some sleeving on the other cables or maybe make a cover to hide some of the PSU?
When I was on air it would get well over 80C at load so I am pretty happy with 60C it's just that I was told that 60C was apparently "crazy high"...
I'm not the be-all-end-all expert on this, but I think 60C is fine for a 32 nm CPU
according to every review I've ever read/watched.
I think whoever told you it was "crazy high" might have been looking at the maximum Tcase
on Intel's spec site for the 970 (linky), which is 67.9C (so 60C is pretty close), but that is
actually not the maximum core temperature for the CPU.
I've found an interesting article discussing this here. I'm pretty tired so I haven't read it yet in
detail but from skimming it quickly it appears to be quite interesting. I'll definitely have to give
it a closer look once I've slept a few hours.
That is a pretty interesting article there, thanks for sharing that!
