Noob: Overclocking i7-930 with P6T Deluxe V2 and Noctua NH D14

Ran Prime 95 BLEND for 1 hour. No errors. Max temps were between 68 - 73. (Room is very warm this time of year / daytime)

In winter this room is really cold - so this should be easy then I expect.

I'll try stage 4..

Ran Prime 95 BLEND for 1 hour. No errors. Max temps were 76, 75, 75, 71. (Room is very warm this time of year / middle of the day.)

Starting to see 75, 76 is making me cautious now. In winter this will be a doddle as we have to wear more clothes to keep warm in this place.

As I write this, 5 minutes after the Prime Test has ended - my temps are idling at 48, 48, 51, 47.

(Question: I've kept my Security Suite/Antivirus enabled in the background. Do you guys actually disable/ turn all of that stuff off (and disconnect from the net) when you are testing with Prime or just leave it all as it usually is?)

I don't have an SSD at the moment and I expect getting one will help make the machine feel a little zippier. At the momemt I'm using old Raptors (without Raid).

I'm not sure what you OCers do. I might use some of the Bios options to only have the machine OC when it's pushed to save on heat and electricity but I'm really not sure. Having it feel zippy is where it's at for me but like I said, an SSD in a couple of months might satisfy that need.

Anyway - I'm now open to suggestions based on the temps etc.. Cheers.

I've decided to keep things as they are until I hear any suggestions from you guys. I have however enabled C1E and Speedstep for now so that the machine runs a little cooler unless pushed and then it goes up to 3600. I'm open to advice and opinions please about that too. Thanks Tom and everyone for now.

tbh dude turn off c1e and speed step. Keep the clocks at 180 as its ok. You wont get the temps that high with normal use so you should be fine.

With any other air cooler you wouldnt have got that far, it seems your room temp is limiting you.

Have you got the fans on the noctua plugs into the motherboard or vie molex on the PSU? (12v)

I've got all of my fans including the Noctua going via my Kaze Master Pro fan controller. They are all turned up as far as they can go. (I know it might not be good to have all eggs in one basket incase the controller fails)

So thats the 3 floor fans on the RV02 case, the 2 Noctua NH D14 fans and I replaced the top Silversone fan at the top of the RV02 case with another Noctua NF P12 fan. Always open to suggestions and thanks..

Theres not much you can do with really high ambients dude. Thats a good voltage to be running (1.25) and a good clock for what it is. I think you are better off staying put as its a good mix of performance and heat.

I'm pretty happy to be honest mate. Yeah it's very hot here at the mo. Coming from a 3.4Ghz P4 - this machine is nice.

To be honest - and I hope I'm not too much of a wuss, although I need to learn more about them, with Speedstep, CIE and C-State enabled - the rig can run a fair bit cooler when I'm not needing to push it (CPU 6 - 7 degrees cooler on idle). The Power used on idle/ browsing/ overnight use, filesharing etc is a fair bit less according to CPUID Hardware monitor. To see the CPU current on idle go down from double to single digits is a nice feeling too when I'm trying to encourage the wife and daughter to save money!

Having said that - it's great to see the machine shoot up to 3600 when it's pushed. Best of both worlds. In the winter - I look forward to 4.0. I'm sure it will be easy when you can literally sit in this room and see your own breath. It's all good. I wonder if there are other tweaks I can do to optimize anything else?

If you read the thread youll see that he has enabled speedstep to help keep the idle speeds down for overnight usage matey.

Speedstep Technology = Cool n quiet unless I am mistaken. It basically allows for automatic downclocking of the CPU when it's not being used hard. Graphics cards do it too. That's basically why the new radeons idle so amazingly low

The program like Core Temp will show real time CPU core temperatures in the task bar if you set it (down on the right by the clock). So when the PC is working hard (or not) you can see how hot it is getting. Unfortunately you have to open the program to see the processor speed. (Well it shows in the main program taskbar icon on the left as a color.) I'd like a program that also shows the processor speed in the taskbar as a number. Then when you start to push the PC - you can guage how hot and how fast it is running. It's good to overclock the rig and then have it idle low when not being used much (if that's your thing) - but it's nice to see the overclock kick in when you need it. All that from the Taskbar would be great.

Everest does that dude. It will tell you the core speed if you set it up to do so. you cant control when the overclock kicks in though.

Yeah cheers. I just tried the demo. The CPU speed will show up on the trial as 2 digits like 2.2 etc. You have to enable them to show up - they are not enabled by default. Anything else which doesn't work on the trial shows up as a T. It shows loads of stuff too..

I emailed Arthur - the creator of Core Temp and he said he will consider putting the CPU frequency in the system tray in the next release.

OK - tonight it is a fair few degrees cooler and raining outside. So I'd like to try an overclock again from 180 to 185.

Ran Prime 95 BLEND but it started erroring very quickly after about 8 seconds. What should I do? The temps didn't go higher than 64. What's the next step please? I've got a few hours to play before sleep..awaiting instructions..cheers..

At the moment the machine is ticking over nicely at 3700 and CPU 42, 42, 44 and 42 degrees. (Motherboard is 41 degrees.)

Its the ram matey, you have reached the limits of it overclock wise Id say. Its either stick with 180bclk or have slower ram now Im affriad. In your situation you are much better off staying at 180.
