Noctua problem (sort of) solved ! (taken from other thread).

48c on all four cores idle.

I posted that in another thread but figured it would be more respectful to continue (and conclude) my problem here.

My 940 oc @ 3.3ghz (it's summer and I don't want to be a spotty kid due to sauna temps) was sitting at 48c idle. After looking around I concluded this is a bit pants. Stock AMD coolers do 42-45 on this CPU idle without an overclock so I would say the Noctua wasn't performing any better than a stock cooler. Not good, especially as it had two fans on. It was only when I took the Noctua off that I realised what had happened.

Look at the CPU.

WTF? When I turned the cooler over I noticed this.

I don't even remember having white thermal paste. Then it dawned on me. A few months ago I did a job for some one and they had brought an OEM CPU. They gave me the CPU, HSF and some crap thermal compound. I use this stuff

So in my haste to get my Noctua on I must have used the wrong stuff. I can't believe I didn't realise. My CPU had burned a clean hole in the cheap thermal grease

After putting a nice dollop on the CPU and reseating the Noctua I now get this.

Which is still not uber but is 10c lower than before. When I run Prime95 I hit 51 at max which I am impressed with. Fair play I guess. Not the best cooler on the planet but still does a decent job. Gotta say though, it was chuffing brilliant on my E4500 C2D. Stable OC to 2.9ghz and idled at 35c. But, there were two less cores to contend with.

I've not touched it. I bet that's Asrock's Auto OC feature. Must find out how to disable it.

Had a look around and apparently Asrock boards Vcore the Phenom 2 very high. Sometimes as high as 1.4v

Mine was auto setting 1.35 and hitting 1.38 before so I set it to 1.32 and it's now about as it should be. Temps haven't changed though. Prime hits 53c now (PC has been on for a couple of hours) as a max temp and it's idling between 40 and 42.

It'll do. I mean that is with an OC. Plus I negated to mention that I only paid £28 for the Noctua when I brought it

hmmm ime shure they should of droped a lil bit,have a snoop of how to disable it as it could be affecting it somehow

I've turned it off. I can't remember why now but it was annoying me.

The voltages were simply set too high by default in the bios so I lowered them. As I said, Asrocks detect the Phenom 2 and give it too much voltage, sometimes up to 1.4.

51c max on full load is very good,i would try for 3.5 or 3.6 with 1.45v

aslong as you stay away from 65c full load your cool

Yeah that's what I read. 62 being the max temp and 65 causing shutdown.

A 45nm CPU should never get that hot tbh. 65nm for sure, but the 45s should run way cooler.

my 940 has been at 68c load and did not shut down,but no you wouldent think they get that hot
