Noctua NH-D14

Alien, have another crack at 4ghz but concentrate on your CPU/NB volts, people never up that voltage enough. I bet if you have a pop and push that one further you'll get the magic 4
wink.gif

Look in the bios you need to look for the CPU/NB volts also helps keep the other frequencies higher aswell as the core.

You should be fine up to 1.45v but can push higher for the sake of seeing a clock and benching with safety just not 24/7. Id put money on if you put that voltage up youll get 4ghz.

Cool. Yeah I ran it all day yesterday at 3.8ghz. It seems to be nice and stable there

19x200 @ 1.4375v

Idle 35-36 (again dips because of the vaporizing in the pipes, now I understand why there are so many
biggrin.gif
) and a max load of 46 in LinX and 43 in gaming (Metro. All the others barely make over 40).

I remember when I got this board it auto volted @ 1.4. Some boards auto volt the X4s to 1.45 (Asrock I'm looking at you !) so it's obviously very safe at those voltages. Max is apparently 1.55 but I don't want to find out
biggrin.gif
It's not the multi that scares me it's the voltages.

Putting the side on gives me a 3c rise so I am going to get some mesh and get creative.

Shitty Alien case airflow. You just need to work on the airflow pattern dude. Mesh just means dust imho also makes the front intake redundant

TBH the mesh would only be to stop fingers and things going in there. Dust is never curable with this thing. Infact any case would suffer the same as the room is small (3mx2m) and the dust is always bad.

I can easily live with the side off because it looks lovely in there. Even more so with the Noctua on

I decided earlier I'm not going to push any harder. There's no point doing a suicide run 'just because' I want a 24/7 OC that I can put to good use. Metro is far smoother now. My WIE score on the CPU has gone up .2 points and my GPU has gone from 7.6 to 7.7. I know it's stupid and should be ignored but I haven't had the chance to run Vantage to compare yet as we have guests here.

BTW.. The temps with the side on? In fairness I am running the case not as designed. On the side panel that I have to remove to get to the insides there is usually a 120mm fan. Now this obs sorts out the airflow, but due to the mahoosiveness of the Noctua I had to remove it. So yeah, in fairness it is running the case out of spec. With the NH-C12P the temps were the same side on/off but I had one of the Noctua vortex type fans in (where you can barely see through the blades.. The 120 that's on the cooler, basically

Knocked up a quick video to show how the temps dip shortly after rising. Amazing stuff

LinX is running there so the CPU is under a full load. Icy

Just thought I would pop back.

The CPU has been running ever since the review @ 3811 (see my sig). It did crash once but I upped the voltage to 1.45 and have played a good 20 hours of NFS HP2 without a single burp. Temps are still 36 idle 46 load in LinX and it's been amazingly stable.

For the hell of it I did run a 50 pass test in Linx and hit 36 flops on every test without a single problem. So I'm very very happy considering I have never seen a pre overclocked one of these chips in a combo over 3.6ghz.

I also double checked the voltage specs and AMD do not recommend running this chip at over 1.5v. So 1.45 is still very low for the yield I am getting

Nice review of the Noctua from a not bias person this is going to 100% be my first CPU cooler.

Plus I think it looks amazing, looks kind of retro.

Another quality review

I'm curious, how effective are these coolers with just the centre fan?

I have a matx case and, assuming its not too tall (this i would need to find out), i would consider one of these with just the centre fan fitted on my x6 1055 (95w) with a mild overclock.

not the same cooler but the same basic design. my ifx14 works well with just 1 fan in the middle but I do have good airflow thru the case as well.

I get the exact same O/C with the voltage. I don't think it's the cooler necessarily... Mine is rubbish. haha!

After running Prime for an hour, a favourite of mine. Temps hit 51'C and no higher. I really wan't to hit the 4 gig sweet spot. I'm going to take Tom's advice that he gave to you and go for it...

To be honest, I'm a little unsure about what voltages to raise the NB/CPU things to????

OKAY so I gave it a go and hit 4 Ghz. I'm pretty happy with the results to be honest...

1.55v for the core

1.55v for the cpu/nb

everything else set to AUTO

200 x 20 - failed to boot

205 x 19.5 - booted at 3997.6 - close enough but I wanted 4Ghz

finally

206 x 19.5 - booted at 4017.1 - pretty happy with those results to be honest.

Temps were 43-44 at idle and shot up under load. Not 100% stable but I wasn't expecting it to be either...

SORRY FOR HIJACKING THE THREAD. JUST WANTED TO SHOW MY RESULTS WITH THE 940.

Upload the images and use the img tags or just use your CpuZ screens

EDIT NVM you got it

Nice overclock bro !

Cheers man, pretty pleased to join the "4Ghz club" to be honest. Didn't even think I'd do it with this CPU. haha!

All I need now is the NH-D14 and I'm done.

might be worth dropping back to a 3.9? my 955 is stable (working on it for afew hours 2day) at 3926.1 nearly tight as a nut dosent break 60 degrees on cores also. cpu temp says 58 max. I know 63 is the magic number for these cpu's is that cores or cpu temp?

Hers is a phone pic of my bios screen might help? Im using a ninja3 and a case with amazing airflow.

3.9Ghz @ 1.35v. That's pretty sweet. I use 1.40v to hold 3.6Ghz, considering ramping it up to 1.45v at 3.8 Ghz...

Do you use the NH-D14, this overclocking thing is getting a bit off topic. Kinda my fault to be honest...
