Noctua announce the NH-D15 - Will air coolers make a comeback?

Watch Noctua's next step be an AIO.. then they blow away the competition(literally) and once again take top performer for another few years.

If that turns out to be the case, I think I could forgive them for the fan colours so long as they don't do a beige rad to match

It's the next logical step really. My next upgrade (not anytime soon) should be a case and a better cooling solution (currently the idea is an h440 with a swiftech h320). If noctua can do me one better that would be amazing. The poo colored fans wouldn't match my rig though.

Dunno if anyone has already mentioned this, but the Phanteks PH-TC14PE beats the Noctua NH-D14 on test, and is, therefore, the best air cooler ATM. It will be interesting to see how well this performs, as this could quite easily re-take the crown!

Well this looks good I do hope it performed better that d14 did it might even beat some aio water coolers but only tom will test it and let us all know. I don't think these are dead as aio water unit as i understand have a 2 to 3 years life spam well for the water fluoride inside as well has a life spam of them that's why I would normally prefer air cooler as it will last longer with no fluoride to worry about and should last life time. one think I hate is dust lol I wish their was pc case that could repel dust lol.

The only reason I like my H100 over a D14 or something comparable is the sheer size of those monster air coolers. I dont like having that much weight dangling from my motherboard because I move it often tinkering with things and hooking up different mice and keyboards. I also like the added airflow in my case by not having a gargantuan heatsink sitting in there. My H100 takes up virtually no room and on the lowest fan setting, it cools my 8150 easily and is extremely quiet. My case fans are all I hear out of it.

That said, the pump's lifespan does worry me. A D14 will sit there and spin with no problem for eons. Not so much for a pump like whats in these AIO coolers. And if an air cooler leaks, well it doesnt short out your whole motherboard like a leaky H100 will. So there are definitely some trade offs.

Thats not to say there is anything wrong with a high end heat sink. Ive actually toyed with the idea of getting something like the D15 when it comes out but I think mainly thats just to scratch the "I want to buy something new" itch we all get time to time.

But yeah I dont think one is necessarily better than the other. I think both have trade offs. If they could make a heat sink that cools like the D14 but is the size of the Cooler Master Hyper 212, we'd be on to something then. But I know, physics gets in the way. :D

Big factor people seem to be missing. The CPU air coolers dump hot air into the case even with the fans directed to the exhaust. I am willing to bet that the inside of ANYONES computer using a D14 is about 5-10 degrees hotter from idle to benchmarking/gaming.

Also I can get an H90 for $60 which cools better than the D14.

Definitely my number 1 air cooler manufacturer atm. I have the NH-D14 for an i7 980 - have never felt the need to change it for a water cooling kit. Whilst gaming the fans barely increase in speed/noise and it copes exceedingly well.
I'd have said air coolers have been blessed recently with the dye size naturally shrinking. I have a secondary i5 haswell system with stock cooler, can't hear it and never gets hot even in gaming, just don't see the need to get a water cooling kit.

Very valid point.

Your h80i doesn't cool as well. I think that's quite an important part.

I really can't see this cooling my cpu cooler than a h80i with push pull my cpu doesn't go over 55℃ with prime 95 running for hours with a fx 8320 oc'd to 4.2 ghz

Oh it's definitely up there, the NH-D14 is a beast and the D15 is going to be a tad better. Iirc the D14 was on the same level as an h80.
I'd still prefer an h80 over the D14, even if it performed worse.

Although AIOs are good ( I now use a H105 in my main pc) and they look nice, in a closed machine with no overclocking and with no side window I would pick a half decent air cooler most of the time, much simpler and quieter.
