Noctua announce the NH-D15 - Will air coolers make a comeback?

Air coolers are less maintenance than water, if the fans fail, which cooler is still able to dissipate heat better? Has that study ever been done? My logic seems to think that the big air cooler will be able to cool better if the fans fail than an aio, but I could be wrong. This was one of the main I went with NH-D14 over an AIO cooler. If my logic is completely flawed and this study has been done, my next upgrade may be to an AIO

Instinct would have told me that the AIO would still perform better passively as I'd imagine it has a higher heat capacity, but it would be interesting to see that for sure. If the pump goes however.....

My NH-D14 is dead silent and I would expect the NH-D15 to be the same. If it is more efficient it would make AIO less attractive to me. Lets see how it performs.

phe

see alot of ppl speaking nonsence water coolers work better then aircullers on lower rps =DDDDD that was the funiest thing since actually aircullers are lower in overall noise aios are way louder on idle especially when we speak about noctua + u dont have pomp that is more sound and 1more part of posible failure and i read about some pomps broke in h100 and burned mobos and ppl didnt get refund or warenty.... so heatsink market will always be there especially for ppl like me my air culler is way more silent and while its black it looks good i actually dont like shity corsair look with shity leds that wear off so fast and colors then look like shit .... only still noctua could start making products with some sence for them too look good since now they look ugly as hell

Don't like the corsair AIO look? There are other brands which look different. Also it depends on what aircoolers as to which one is quieter. I'm pretty sure my seidon is quieter than the amd stock aircooler as well.
Good generalization.

It will be close to an h100i at the cost of good looks.

Exactly this kind of people. Heard some stories about an h100 damaging the mainboard (btw i heard stories of heavy heatsinks breaking mainboards) and the rest is just thin air, there we have someone choosing aircooling over an AIO.
The pump on an AIO kit is pretty much dead silent, it's not a washing machine. Iirc the only Corsair AIO cooler with LEDs is the h100(i), maybe the h110 as well.
Waterloops work better than aircoolers on low RPMs because waterloops usually have a bunch of radiators which need next to no airflow to keep the rig cool. They have a larger heat dissipation area.

I'm an analogue man myself, so I'd still rather have a beautiful looking air cooler in my rig. Look at ANY server, and tell me what they are cooled by - I guarantee it will be an air cooler. The peace of mind in that your cooler will still work if the fan dies is worth the large size IMO.

You want a server cooler in your rig? Those server rooms are loud my friend.
The watercooling setup will also work if the fan dies, it gets critical when the pump dies.

This is not my experience with AIOs and air coolers, I had a D14 and even with the fans at 40% it is was still louder than my H100 is with stock fans at 40%.

Temps are also better than the D14 with fans at 40%, on my D14 temps on load would be ~60 with my H100 temps on load are ~50-55.
As for pump noise on AIOs, I can't hear mine at all. I know on older AIOs like the H80 and Coolit Echo etc they were noisy, but on the newer models the pump noise can't be heard. Not unless you put your ear right by it anyway.

If the fans fail on AIO's thay have a habit of boiling the liquid and can explode the same as when its pump stops working.

I know I work in them ;) The coolers are actually passive heat sinks in the majority of servers, and modern servers are very quiet! These new HP servers are barely noticeable :3

They get saturated with heat with no fans, they will overheat (which will kill the pump)

The last one i was in was insanely loud. But you work with them, so you probably have access to newer ones.
I didn't know that AIOs react that badly to a dying fan, but the risk is low and in germany i have a good chance of getting a refund on my parts.

AIOs are a bad compromise between proper water loop and a decent air cooler.

Sure, AIOs are couple of degrees cooler than air coolers, but they're both pricier and louder.

I, for one, am very interested in seeing some respectable reviews of this air cooler. I am getting ready for a new build, and have been struggling with this issue of water and electricity. I am old school,(58 years of age) and had thought that I would purchase the Hydro Series H105. But before I decide which path I will take, perhaps TTL will do a review of the NH-D15 ????

That's what I was thinking...any rack full of servers I've been around is loud. I know my rack at work is. The only quiet datacenters I've seen are the watercooled ones.

No :) The new rack mount ones, we've just moved our backup servers into a datacenter and you can't hear them!

Pretty sure the results will be better than the D14, so you could judge by that until someone does a review. I have the D14 and love it.
