No signal

I've been encouraging my friend to get his hands on real PC hardware for quite a while, and now he's finally done it. He decided to upgrade his off-the-shelf PC with a new PSU and GPU. The PSU is a Corsair CX500M and the GPU an MSI GTX 960 Gaming 2G.
Everything worked fine once we resolved some driver issues, but if he boots the system with the side panel on, the monitor never gets a signal. Judging from the Windows audio, it boots seemingly with no other issues than the signal one.
Any help would be much appreciated, since having to take the side panel off, to boot one's system can be quite frustrating ;)

have you tried to see if the onboard gfx is active when it boots up with blank screen, check in the bios that its not set to boot to onboard video first?

Checked the connections on power cable for gfx card? (side panel could be moving it slightly and so it not then getting power)

Nothing touches the side panel, when it's on the case.

The weird part is that if he powers it up with the side panel off, it boots to desktop without any problems, and when he then puts the side panel on, nothing happens. It only happens if he powers it on while the side panel is attached. That's why I'm completely dumbfounded by it.

May be dumb here and correct me if I'm wrong, but COULD the side panel by any chance maybe discharge the GPU or the display connector in any way?. As it's weird it doesn't work when the side panel is on and does work when it's not on lol.
