NH-D14 or H100

Hey there OC3D members, please pardon me if my English isn't very good and if this question dosen't belong here

I'm currently seeking on a new cooler for an i5 2500k and can't really seem to make a stern decission.

I've read and seen the reviews by TTL (big fan alright

) and they really came close with each other.

The price of the H100 is a concern for me since if I get the NH-D14, I can easily swap the fans with better onces (not to say that Noctua fans are terrible, they're supperb) such as the Xigmatek XAF series and Cougar's Vortex series. On the other hand, if I get the NH-D14, RAM would be an issue (Corsair Vengeance 1866 Cl9) Then again, if I get the NH-D14, I can use the spare money to get a RipjawsX. The quiteness of the NH-D14 is surely a plus, but I could also get some diffrent 120mm and get a push-pull config on the H100 (of course at some great expense).

To make it simple, I'm a bit concern on these products on certain aspects:

NH-D14:

Size (Enorrrrmous!)

Weight?

Clearence

H100:

Price

Noise

Fans

I'm going to use a CM HAF X and I've seen videos that some were able to fit a H100 on top without sacrificing the 200mm fans (even if H100 with 4 fans push-pull)

I really can't make up my mind!

Please shed some light on me by saying what you'd pick and why.

Thanks alot!

I still prefer the D14 over the H100. The H100 will perform as well as the D14 on the condition that the included fans are run at the highest speed, which means it's going to be pretty noisy. Truthfully, I'd go for the one that is superb right out of the box. D14 fits that category. It comes with fantastic fans. You'll have to spend a lot more just to replace the ones from the H100 and additional costs for another 2 more if you're thinking about push/pull configuration.

The CPU mounting kit from the D14 is excellent. You won't have any problems with weight deforming or damaging the motherboard. Like you mentioned, you can use the extra savings and get some high performance Ripjaws X. You can also take a look at Corsair's low profile Vengeance, and Kingston's HyperX/Genesis also. Mushkin Frostbyte and Ridgeback will also fit under the D14 without any problems.

I have the H100 and when the computer starts up, Ill admit it sounds like a JET, but once Windows loads the fans throttle down. Even under extreme load the fans are barely audible from inside my case.

When I turn them down to the lowest setting, they disappear from my auditory senses.

I'd say, if you want a solid CPU cooler that will get the job done and get it done well, then go with the D14. If you like the extra space, the look, and to try a little something new, then go with the H100. It's let me overclock to the 5.4 range and still kept my CPU under 65 degrees. And I find it to be very quiet.

Yup, the H100 is a great cooler. The fans and the price is something to think about though. The H100 will only fit in certain cases that allow for 240mm radiator mounting. It certainly will keep the motherboard from clutter around the CPU area, so you can fit the tallest RAM possible.

Yeah, if I opt for the H100, I can't really upgrade them in near time... Still, when you're gaming, you can't really hear how loud fans are when you've got headphones on right? I guess the clean looks of the H100 seems more appealing, but is it really worthed the price premium? Any idea if the D14 would look good on the HAF X side window? And would it be a problem to the big VRM heatsink of ASRock Z68 Extreme7 or the side fans of HAF X? Oh and would you think it'll be a good idea if I changed the NF fans to Xigmatek's XAF series 140mm and Cougar PWM Vortex 120mm?

It's not really that much more... I think its worth the price bump just for the simplicity and maintenance-free liquid cooling. About how the D14 would look in a HAF, I guess it depends on which one. The HAF 922 and 932 would work fine as the window shows more toward the back of the I/O panel, but the HAF X has the annoying side fan and slanted window corner. You can see mine below and get an idea...

Wouldn't bother going for push/pull with the H100, you won't see a huge difference in performance. Have you looked at the Phanteks PH-TC14PE - they come in lots of funky colours.

Yup, I agree. I think you'll like the Phantek coolers as they come in a variety of colours. You may be more acceptable to it than the plain look of D14.

WHy does everyone hate the Noctua colours?
sad.gif
Imo they look very nice, you jsut have to get used to them

I don't mind the colour at all. I think a lot of a people disagree with the peach/pink theme Noctua has for all their fans. If they made their fans in white instead of the current theme, then I'm sure many people will be rushing to the stores to get them.

Tbh, I have nothing with noctua and it's actually looks great, I actually like the classic look. I think I'm going to get thd D14 instead, in the end the price is the difference. And if I used the spare money to buy better fans like I mentioned above, it ahould outdone the two in stock settings right?
smile.gif

The Noctua fans were designed for very consistent air pressure rather than just a flow of air moving across the space in a case. You'll have to find some fans that are just as quiet and have similar performance on par or better than the Noctua fans. I believe some of the be quiet! and Cougar fans are great choices too.

Agreed.

Well the Xigmatek fans has a greater airflow but a little less pressure (though quiter it seems) whilist the vortex surpasses the P12 of noctua in airflow, sound or pressure (+ a pwm feature)..

Maybe I'd just get them and experiment with each other? Probably the only downside is that I'm gonna ruin the clasic look of it (sorry noctua!

thats what it looks like.

To be honest though, save some money, and/or pick some other cheaper parts and get a proper WCing loops, it'll be nice to look at (better then the H100, and way better then the D14) and you'll get way more preformance. something like the XSPC Rasa RS360 would be perfect for the HAF X.... i myself really want to save up and build a proper loop (but i want to go for the thicker RX360 kit, as i want to cool both the cpu and my gpu)

up to you in the end, just wanted to show you what it would like it (since you have a pic with the H100 from Cyanide89 you can compare now)

Well that's true but, problem is, there are no propper WCing kit in my country.. So I'm stuck with D14 n H100..

One question, have you ever tried removing the NF-P12 whilist inside the case so that the RAMs are accessible?
