Just a quick question.

If I upgrade to an x79 Mobo will a core i5 cpu work on it, if so which ones? Sandy Bridge, Ivy bridge? I'm asking because I want to use a core i5 whilst I save up for a Haswell cpu when that comes out in 2013.

Would appreciate simple answers as I'm a complete melon head. :)

Out of the ones you listed in your link, i'd say the best price to performance wise would be the Asus P8Z77-M PRO. The best boards in that list though are either the Maximus V Gene or the Sniper M3.

I think I'm going with the P8Z77-M and a 2500k

Thanks a lot for the advice guys. :)

Better to go with a i5 3570k mate :)

Ray.....

Oh is it really?

I heard 2500k has better overclocking potential.

To be honest though i've never increased the clocks on any CPU i've owned have the attitude of "yeah maybe i might do that sometime".

So what are the advantages of the 3570k

Sorry for the late reply. :)

Ivy's faster per clock than Sandy, so a 3570K at 4GHz is faster than a 2500K at the same clocks.
Ivy also has better memory controller, native USB3 capabilities, native PCIe 3 and Lucid MVP.
If you're buying from scratch then the newer stuff is generally the way to go, especially if overclocking isn't your thing.

I think I've read every review I can get my hands on and the 3570k is better than the 2500k in about 98 out of 100 benchtests. Its just got better optimizations, more efficient architecture, etc.

Z77 boards are easier to come by, are optimised for Ivy Bridge, though sandy bridge will work in them they arent optimised for sandy.

The advantage that the 3570k has over the 3770k is thats about $100 AUD you'll save toward your Haswell build later this year, if you bother with it after you fall in love with your Ivy Bridge system.

btw, its noob, not newbie, ya noob :P Just kidding mate :)

3570k it is then. ^_^

Noo it's newbie, for me they have two different meanings. A newbie is someone who is in experienced. A Noob would be someone who has lots of experience but is still making the same mistakes. ;)

lol Too right mate :D

The money you save on the cpu can go toward a sexy new Corsair H100i. As Tom says 'Air coolers are banned here' lol
