New Xbox One Project Scorpio specs have been leaked, confirming that the new console will have no ESRAM, 4x the L2 cache and a GPU that is more advanced than AMD's current Polaris offerings.

Interesting stuff. And a good read, even with the usual repetitions. :P

12GB of VRAM is a lot to tap into. I wonder whether they will go this route or 8GB of GDDR5X. I skipped the Xbox One and PS4. It offered very little reason to upgrade over the PS3, despite some excellent games. This new Scorpio project looks great, though. I'd rather play Uncharted 4 and the ilk on that (PS4 Pro, obviously, for Uncharted).

That's exactly what I thought when the consoles got unveiled, this Project Scorpio and PS4 Pro are what the original Xbox One and PS4 should have been the whole time.

With the performance of Polaris 10 (or potentially more)? I doubt that would have been possible at the time. The console would have cost £600 or more. Back in 2013 when the consoles were released, we didn't even have the GTX 970 yet and the RX 480 is more powerful than a 970. The problem, I think, was in part due to the huge lifespan of the 360 and PS3.

To play games at 4K with higher resolution texture more VRAM is needed. Even the PS4 Pro has extra memory, though this comes in the form of DDR3.

On the PS4 Pro a lot of OS stuff is moved to the new DDR3, allowing an extra gigabyte of GDDR5 to be used for games.

It will be interesting to see what Microsoft have done, as the PS4 Pro has already been used very well for some games.

That being said I think it is a waste to go 4K crazy, as nobody owns 4K screens right now. That will change in time, though to me it seems like a push too far ATM.

Are they aiming for 4K/30FPS?

A friend has a good 4K TV and it does look nice. It's definitely the future of sitting room entertainment, but it's not part of my personal agenda.

Seems to me like they want developers to make games for XB1 at 900p/1080p and aim for 4K or 1800p on Project Scorpio.

It seems that developers have freedom to do what they like with the hardware, even saying that devs can keep physics at 30FPS and run graphics at 60FPS. Not exactly a proper 60FPS, but a decent idea.

It will be interesting to see what developers can do with the new hardware.

I'm considering getting an XBONE solely as it's the cheapest way to get a UHD bluray player into my lounge room. That's where the PS4 Pro let us down. Aside from that - absolutely agree there's been no compelling reason to upgrade from a PS3.

I know heaps of people with 4k Televisions (so we can watch mostly SD broadcasts) Not so much PC monitors.

Could very well be a Vega class GPU in this. Considering it's launch date it would be well within reach. It would obviously be custom but I can see it happening.
I suspect the CPU to be a slightly upgrade, think it was Puma after Jaguar? Could be that with much higher clockspeeds.

It's a shame they've stayed with the jaguar CPU though, From all the info I've read any way.

Would have been good to see that get a nice upgrade.

A clockspeed bump alone would have been quite the upgrade.
Just did some research too. The "Beema" APU(puma cores) would be the logical next step up from the "kabini" chip(jaguar cores) used in the current consoles. So either the clockspeeds are getting massively cranked up due to a smaller node process they will more than likely switch to, or they upgrade to a newer core.

They do have the most newest core, the "Basilisk" architecture, but its based off Zen and only dual cores. So some extensive rework would need to be done.. highly doubt this would be in this console though.

lol whut, 4k TV's are all over the place, and are super affordable at the moment, you can pick them up for < 400 quid now

Fair, I guess I just know different kinds of people then. Whenever I ask most people about 4K they stare at me blankly.

Most people I know with 4K TVs have it to watch sportsball on Sky or something, or just bought it because it was the high-end model from their favourite brand.

I'd prefer it if devs worked for more stable framerates rather than pushing the resolution envelope, though looking at Digital Foundry's PS4 Pro stuff a lot of devs seem to be missing that point at times.

I know what you mean. I always design my PC builds to attain a certain locked frame-rate then pick the resolution I can achieve that frame-rate at within the budget. I still wouldn't consider 2160p remotely realistic as a gaming resolution right now; it's simply too expensive to attain that magical 60FPS. Of course consoles have to appeal to a different market.

Unfortunately "4K" is the marketing buzz-word right now and because most people don't truly understand what it takes to run those kinds of resolutions properly if a product doesn't support "4K" it's "outdated" and "worthless". It seems people would rather see low frame-rates or upscaling at UHD than a consistent 1080p60 experience.

You also have to consider that they've already told us that there won't be games exclusive to the Scorpio (except VR which they don't consider console gaming) which means they'll have to run on the older XBone hardware as well.
Even with that said I can't see this putting out native 4K for games, especially not at 60fps AND at a reasonable price point (Microsoft have repeatedly stated it's a "high-end product").
The only people this will make sense as a purchase to are spoilt kids who want bragging rights at school and fanboys IMO.

I remember back in the day when the Atari Jaguar came out, only the rich kids could buy it. It looked the best and had the best graphics for the time, and we all envied the kids who had them as we were 'only' with NES and SNES.

But it never took off and was only there for Show and for the rich rich kids to brag about. Makes me feel old....

I've had a 4k TV for about two years, never used the 4k input.

I know they're quite cheap now, but the thing is every one was told they needed a HDTV then literally as soon as they bought them they were told they needed a 4k one. Enthusiasts may have jumped on it but old Plain Paul didn't bother.

Every time I buy a new TV something else immediately comes along. It's almost as bad as PCs.

A lot of games are running 1080 and just being scaled to 1800. Technically 4k, although it's cheaping out.

Can't remember what game, but everything is rendered in 1080 but the UI is specifically rendered in 4k on the ps4 pro

You can have enthusiast console gamers. I know they may not synonymous, but they are compatible. Some people really do prefer gaming on consoles. There is something magic about it for them. They're 'enthusiastic' about it.
