New System Build. First Build Would like some Advice

You are stock yes?

3.7GHz, very mild overclock but I'm unexperienced... Rather overclock more later than too much in one go :p
Maybe I'm just lucky that my room is usually pretty cold and my case has good airflow ^_^

I think I will stick with the i7 but I would like the closed loop water cooling thing

An i7 really won't give you an advantage in gaming, maybe 3-5fps max. However, switching to an IB chip and using a Z77 board would give you PCI-E 3.0. That's not really relevant with todays GPU's, but it sure is more future proof (:
And it would save you some money, however if you are willing to spend that money on it I won't stop you! i7s are really nice to have, they just don't add much for gaming nowadays ^_^

Then get it,its your build, your money and your time. I would get it myself, the H100 is a capable alternative to big air coolers

Hi Torak289,

all good advice as always, I have just had my H100 back from an RMA and now works an absolute treat clearly the last one was knackered and leaked, however in its absence I needed a CPU cooler so I got my hand on both of these babies, both are excellent CPU Coolers.

Both do an excellent job and for me probably the best air coolers for your money IF you dont like look of the NOCTUAS which again are a star buy.

Listen to the guys though with your Heatsink choose your ram carefully low profile is a must, I have Corsair Platinum Steelies and had to move everything sideways out of the priority slots as the ram and heatsink combo just does not fit, now with the return of my H100 happy days as this does give you much more room to play with.

Good Look with your build and post some pics as you go :)

Thanks for the advice I have to see what my budget can stretch to I like the look of the H100. Just the fact it's got such a big double capable radiator

If you are using programs like maya regularly then generally having hyperthreading will be useful. I'd get a 3770K not the 2700. Ivy bridge on balance is better than Sandy largely because of the chipset. More power efficient, pcie3 and a better memory controller are some of the big ones. Shifting heat isn't an issue - you'll still get 4.5-4.7GHz on a decent cooler which is similar to the performance of a Sandy chip running slightly faster.

Difference? Between sandy and ivy ?

Yes - Ivy is a refined version of Sandy. It is more power efficient, slightly faster and has got updated bits like a more stable memory controller and access to Pcie3. It is manufactured on a smaller size die though which means it gets hotter than sandy and limits the overclock by 1-200MHz depending on the chip.

Ivybridge is faster than SandyBridge at the same speed BUT JUST A LITTLE !!
i5=4 cores - i7=4 cores+8 logical cores or threads.

hey guys from all your advice this is what I have decided to go with:
Sapphire HD 7950 Vapor-X OC 3072MB
Intel i5-3570k
ASRock Z77 Extreme4 M
Adata XPG SX900 128GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s SSD
Corsair Hydro H80i
Corsair XMS3 16GB 4x4GB 1600MHz

What do you think of this?

Seems like a pretty solid setup, though 16GB is a bit overkill for gaming. Oh well, RAM is so cheap nowadays that it doesn't matter much

Btw, I'm assuming you mean 7950? Not 7960 :p

Yep >.< Typo and the 16GB of RAM is for Animation where the more you have the better.

Ahh yeh, the animation. I remember now :p
*has a terrible memory*

But yeah, seems good! Got a nice big hard drive though, reckon that'd come in handy when doing animation and things like that? :o

I also have a 6TB Network Drive so I only really need the SSD and the 2TB internal Drives.

nice torak,

nice specs, gonna start building something similar myself.

no biggy but just the one SSD any other HD drives?

I would be tempted, I have x2 ssd'z as you can see in my signature just more or less finished this build and am now thinking a similar thing, and why not 3TB less than a £100 at the moment ! :)

They were even cheaper before that flood, but luckily prices are starting to come back down again! :)

And tbh, I'd chose a Samsung or WD 1TB drive over a 3TB Seagate any day! Even if they're the same price. I just personally feel like these are a lot more reliable :3
