New Scam Going Around

Was just talking to a friend of mine over in America who is currently going to law school and he let me know of a brand new entrapment scam that has been setup by a group of shyster lawyers in America, Switzerland and Sweden to yet again bleed money from unsuspecting people.

This scam is a disguised link, So someone could comment on something in a YouTube video, Facebook comment section and it will look like something quite harmless and it will be a real conversation about the topic at hand followed by a link, Something for example like a comment on an OC3D GPU review -

"Thanks for the help, Hopefully will get this GPU if funds permit, currently building a system, Here is my PCPartpicker list, Can you tell me if something is missing <insert disguised link>"

These links always go to copyright material and in some more sinister scenarios some VERY questionable content, Again this is all setup to entrap people who harmlessly click on a link thinking it's something else, Then comes the letters demanding money, Followed by threats of court hearings etc....

As they primarily work out of Switzerland which have some nasty laws protecting shysters, They are watertight on several fronts, So be warned, Even if you are having what you think is a genuine conversation with someone and they post a link to a PC Part picker list, Or a youtube video or whatever, Unless you know them, Be very careful, This new group of shysters will do anything for money, Even going as far as carrying a conversation on over multiple days.

Wait... So you shouldn't click on links anyone now or what exactly do you mean here? It was a bit blurry to me as in the context. As far as I understand in your post, basically any link can be harmful, wether it be on a Youtube video, Facebook comment or similar. Hence, you can't click any link, as then you're basically fecked?...

F12 then examine link.. or just hover over it, most browsers show the path in the lower left corner of your screen. "Don't trust - don't click"

Doesn't help you at all really. Once clicked they have access to all the data that flows through. You'll easily be identified.

VPNs are nice but not really great. Dedicated firewalls, non-ISP based DNS with support for DNS over TLS/HTTPS, and a VPN are required if you really want to be safe and protect privacy.

You can only be identified if the VPN gives user info, Most VPN's do not keep logs.
