New rig advice? Up to 2500€, i7 920 @4.2Ghz, 8HDDs, WC, near-silent

Hi all,

besides the introductory post this is my first post on these wonderful forums.

Very, very soon I'm going to order a new rig but since this is the first system I'm going to be cooling on H2O, I'm in dire need of some expert advice, which is where you guys come in ;-)

Here's some requirements for the setup:

- Needs to cost less than 2500 euro's

- Core i7 920 at or above 4.2Ghz

- Enclosure needs to be able to house 8 HDD's

- Needs to be very, very quiet (near-silent when idle)

- Liquid Cooling, I was thinking CPU + GFX

- Extremely little or (preferably) NO casemodding required.

First of all, of course, I need to know if these are realistic expectations:

- Can we fit everything into the case as I don't want an external rad

- Are the 8HDD's going to give me heat issues (Was planning on using drive bays that fit 3*3,5" HDD into 2* 5.25" bays).

- I'm fairly certain I can do this within the limits of the provided budget, but I can stretch it a bit if needed.

I've compiled a preliminary list of components, but I don't even know if everything will work good together (as far as the WC is concerned, I mean). Here's what I was thinking:

Case + Fans:

========

Silverstone Temjin Series TJ07B-W Black

Sharkoon SATA QuickPort Intern 3-Bay * 3

Noctua NF-P12 fans for the rad and case possibly also case fans

Liquid stuff:

========

TFC Xchanger 360 Triple Rad

Laing DDC-1 MCP350 12V Pump

Watercool HeatKiller Rev. 3.0 S1366 CPU Block (Apogee XT nowhere to be found in Europe)

GPU block for ATI 5870 (EK?)

Danger Den RAD-Reservoir RES-005

Tubing (what size?)

'The connection stuff' (fittings, clamps,... )

Some liquid, I'd like it to be white, but I suppose milk won't cut it...

Everything else:

==========

Asus P6T WS Professional (need the PCI-X slot for my Areca controller)

Intel Core i7 920 - D0 stepping

Corsair Dominator DDR3 3x 2GB 1600Mhz

6* Samsung HD103SJ - 1TB

2* WD Velociraptor 300GB (I own these already, not to be included in budget)

Enermax REVOLUTION85+ 1050W

Asus BC-08B1ST 8x Blu-Ray drive

Some ATI 5870 card. (recommendations?)

I'm totally open to suggestion for everything here, so please, let me know what you think. Thanks!

Cheers,

K!

Your thread must have disappeared with all the other threads.

Now that you have bumped your thread, and essentially I have too, you should get some posts.

Not sure what you want anyone to say! Everything looks good and will fit...

OK, well mainly I'm concerned about which tubes, clamps, fittings, ... to choose. If anyone could list make me a 'shopping basket' for these, that'd be mightily appreciated ;-)

I was also wondering if the rad can just be screwed into the case or if I need to drill any holes for that. Would I have enough cooling power with this rad to do the CPU + GPU in 1 loop? Pull or Push/Pull?

For the GPU cooling, do I need to avoid any brands (different board design) or are they basically all the same? Any recommendations for a GPU block (ATI 5870).

Thanks in advance all!

/K

I can see why ur thinking hard about this build b4 going ahead.

On harddrives alone, ur going to safely need 200w+, add in the br player, I would personally set 250w as cover just for these units.

That being said, just getting any quality psu with enough wattage might not be enough. It would be wize to consider that the correct wattage is supplied over the correct connections. Many psus emphasise on gpu power to take the extra wattage over 750w psus and below. Jim would be a good source of reply to this. (the one stated may well be good enough)

Think u need to pre-sketch what is going to fit where in the case, especially where all the drives will go in relation to wc'ing.

Hi,

Thanks, I've did quite some research on the PSU's, especially concerning their efficiency, but some extra advice on the things you mentioned (line stability, correct wattage, etc...) would be very welcome.

All the hard drives are going into the 5,25" 3-in-2 bays so the whole bottom section is free for me to use on the wc equipment. Still in doubt on which brand of bays to use however. I will assume that a bay that uses a fan will be better for my drives, but also noisier. Dillema.

Cheers,

K!
