Hello guys , i`m preparing to build new rig soon. cant decide about mobo. my first plan was to put everything on a 790i(Asus Striker 2Extreme 790i + q9550+gf 9800gx2 and OCZ ddr3 1800 MHz ) based chipset but after i readed that it have problems with support high speed memory modules and have errors after OC CPU i started to have c:confused:ncerns. What is your opinion about this chipset and maybe any alternative options?

Thanks

I've had only one problem with 790i board (Striker II Extreme) and it is the same as every other person around the globe on a 7-series chipset. Video does not want to play for more than a few seconds before the system crashes. That is at stock speeds as well as OC speeds.

Never heard about memory issues even on xtremesystems I haven't heard that so can't really help there.

Other than that I've had NO problems with the board at all.

I've never had any problems with my 780i-mobo, it runs like a dream. :) Never even heard about any video-problem...

Really? There are so many complaints to nVidia about the 780 and 790 chipsets beacuse of that one thing. Wonder why you have got away with it.

780i <-- cant complaint , using it now , about video i had 4 time strange system crashes , lots of green and blue dots on screen , after this blue screen but i think is because of sli ,didnt have it before i buyed second card ,and what about 790i ;] wnna really know your opinion guys (especially about Asus striker II extreme if someone have it).

thanks

OK well here is the good news and great news then :D

Good news:

I have a Striker II Extreme and the only thing missing from this board is a sexy secretary to massage your buttocks while you play games for the massive amount of time you can now spend on your mentally quick machine. I cannot fault it in any way what so ever and I'm a grumbly sod. Throw settings at it regardless of how dumb and it will almost always go through POST and then try to boot. If the settings are remotely good it will survive. Ive had it running 3.6GHz Q6600 (400x9) with 1.4V and AC Freezer 7.

Great news:

790i chipset movie crashing problem seems to have been fixed in the latest chipset update which I patched today :D it was talking about it that prompted me to check for updates again. So thank you for getting me to think about it :)

Many blamed the 7series problem on SLi as all the systems had SLi that were affected but even running the cards separate or only one installed still caused problems it was solely driver related and nVidia had been told LOTS of times by the communities.

Seems to be fixed in the 790i update not sure about others though.

Could be with the initial BIOS, but I never got that far, cause the card didn't like the Q6600 with the out of the box-BIOS. That's the only problem I've ever encountered. But that was fixed by Asus pretty quick. Now, I've had my CPU up to 3,8GHz, and it posted like a dream, even though it hit me with a BSOD after a few minutes into a 3Dmark06-run. :p I've got another P5N-T Deluxe (got it for free from the store cause of some slow RMA) laying here, just waiting for the rest of the kit to get here, then I'll see if there are any problems with that one.

If you're heading for 790i - We'd recommend taking a look at the EVGA board. This is great, stable, packed with features and overclocks really well!

We've found it to be just about the best 790 board we've laid hands on yet. :)

Whilst the EVGA board is a great board, it is however just a reference design.

The ASUS board offers far superior options. In fact, there is so many options it's mind-orgasmic.

Personally, I'd shoot for a Maximus Extreme for a DDR3 board...

Do review searches as the problems don't seem to be resolving. My video is unfortunately still crashing but takes over 20mins to do it.

Think the BIOS or driver is still mucking around.

790i is definately a improved over the previous Nvidia chipsets. However Only pick this chipset when u go SLI, if not safe u some cash and get a P35, as P35 is still king with DDR2, unless u jump on the boat for a DDR3 I would suggest u get a X38 or X48 or 1 of the upcomming P45 ( around the corner).

When you talk about the video crashing, do you mean any video such as watching dvd's, using quicktime etc etc? Is there a fix on the horizon? Posting the cheque for my evga 790i tomorrow but dont want to end up with something that doesnt work 100% as i use my pc for watching films.....

Wow, has anyone gone onto the evga forum and read about the amount of 790i boards being RMA'd? New 780i with 1600FSB being released as well...if its not already out.....Mental.
