I'm sorry for any mistake I make, my English is not that good!
Hello! I'm new to the forum, so here's a small introduction:
I'm an 18 year computer enthusiast from the Netherlands.
At the age of 4 I got my first computer! It had an Intel 80486 if I remember correctly and she runs MS-DOS... I actually booted her up yesterday for the first time in 5 years and she still runs great. Caught myself playing Prince of Persia for 2 hours
My next computer was a Highscreen with a Pentium III, running Windows 98. She's standing next to me right now, still going strong. Then I got my hands on a computer with Windows XP. XP has been my OS of choice for quite a while. I believe that thing had a Pentium IV @1.8GHz, 256mb RAM and a 20GB HDD. Awesome computer.
In 2007 my parents bought me a Packard Bell. It had a Celeron D @3.49 Ghz (yes, that is a
single core CPU), 512mb RAM, 160Gb HDD, and ATI (AMD) Radeon Xpress 200 series integrated graphics. God, did I have a lot of fun with that thing even though it didn't have an internet connection. It had Windows Vista Home Basic installed and after 2 years I knew all the ins and outs of it. Years of tweaking the registry and editing system files...
But as my interest for computers grew I started reading and learning. My computer just couldn't keep up with me. It all started with a RAM upgrade, from 512mb to 2048mb. The speed increase was tremendous . Also, I started getting familiar with AtiTool and so I started overclocking the integrated graphics.
Then I got a Nvidia GeForce 6200 LE with passive cooling from an old friend. Immediately grabbed a glue gun and glued an 80 mm fan to it, running from a 5 V pin from a MOLEX-connector. That's when I really got into overclocking (even though it is a crappy card to begin with).
I was reading some things about my motherboard and I saw it allowed for Pentium Dual Core CPU's. And, lucky me, I found one. A Pentium D 915, clocked at 2.8 GHz. Got it for €8,-!!!

Also ordered an Arctic Freezer 13 Rev. 2 and some Cooler Master cooling paste. After a lot of stressful moments it booted. And I was happy.
That is, until a close friend of mine swapped out his old graphics card for an EVGA GTX 650 Ti SSC. And so I got his old card, a GT420 OEM with 2 GB of memory. It was a dramatic performance increase over the 6200 LE.
Then came a time of casemodding. I painted the whole interior black and me and the same friend I got that GT420 from made a window for the case. I soldered some LED-lights together, we drilled some holes for fans... And voila.
Everything was fine until my HDD became slower and slower. Also, I started to become an audiophile. So I ordered a Seagate 1 TB SSHD and an Asus Xonar D1. I grabbed a copy of Windows 7 and installed it.
Also during this whole process I bought a couple of Dell computers (Dimension 4550 which required some soldering on the motherboard, Dimension 2400, and 2x Dimension 3000, all for €5,-), which are now running small game servers.
From:
- Celeron D 3.49 GHz
- 512 MB RAM
- 160 Gb HDD
- ATI Radeon Xpress 200 series (256mb)
- Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit
- 250W PSU
- Crappy on board audio
- Standard case without any fans.
To:
- Pentium D 915 (OC@3.22 GHz)
- 4096 MB RAM
- 1000 GB SSHD
- Nvidia GT420 OEM OC (core@850Mhz, mem@950Mhz, 1900Mhz effectively)
- Windows 7 Professional N 64-bit
- 250W PSU
- Asus Xonar D1
- Modded case with: 1x 120mm fan | 1x 92mm fan | 1x 80mm fan
And it is still my main system.
I know, it is quite the story. But I have learned a lot from this process, and I actually build computers for people now ^_^ Unfortunately I have a lot of expensive hobbies so I don't have enough money to build myself a new system... But that's why I entered the sweepstakes!
