Right, hey there people new here but first time for everything!

I've been planning on upgrading my system for a long time and I finally decided with exams nearly over and the cash flow starting to go again I might get a new build. So I had a couple of Ideas first an AM3 system but then sidelined that, for obvious reasons, and then I came across the my problem, i5 or i7 950

So...

Bearing in mind I have a budget of £1000, yet I don't need ssds or other stuff (transfering them from old comp), only the stuff listed needs upgrading

i5 2500k build (idea):

CPU: 15 2500k

GPU: MSI GTX 570 (Im planning to go at least a tri-sli setup)

MoBo: MSI Big Bang Marshal p67 B3 rev

Ram: Corsair vengeance 8gb kit

PSU: undecided need guidance

CPU cooler: Corsair h70

Case: Now this is a real problemo, with that xl-atx i'm wondering what behemoth im going to need to fit it in.

Next...

i7 950 build (idea)

CPU: i7 950

GPU: MSI GTX 570

MoBo: Gigabyte G1 Guerrilla

Ram: Corsair vengeance

Case: Corsair 650D

CPU cooler: H70

Okay couple of parameters:

1. colour scheming is a big plus, just what I like.

2. Only well known and respected brands.

3. More components from same brand big plus

4. 950-1000£

Any help would be much appriciated and i await to hear your ideas,

cheers,

Prof.

couple of questions mate.

why tri sli 570s? i mean you would be better just getting a 590, hell you could almost get 2 for the price of 3 570s

why the same corsair ram in both builds? others do better sticks for the same money as those.

h70? again why? with that you will limit your overclock as for the same cost a top end air cooler will give better temps.

tbh of the 2 i would look at the sandybridge route as it will give you room to upgrade it later while the 1366 socket is about to become eol. yes it does have hex core cpu but they will cost, even 2nd hand and its still a limited path compared to the 1155 which is only just going to get better for the next few months.

Hey there cheers for the input mate, honestly the h70 as i wanted to try something new and the noctua is a fugly beast and I hate mine with a massive passion.

What ram would you recommend for the i5 2500k setup, mushkin?

As for the gpu, i'm starting out with one 570, and aiming to go a tri SLI but thats way off in the future and i doubt i'd ever get to that point. So in short im buying one gtx 570 to start with an eye to SLI or beyond.

What cooler would you recommend and ram? and are the choices (apart from the aforementioned ones) solid ones?

once again, cheers for the input, much appriciated

i cant knock your choices but as you just said trisli is probably not going to happen, if you only plan on adding a 2nd 570 then you dont need the big bang which also means you options for cases is much wider and you dont need to spend as much on a massive psu.

if your more about looks i think the 2500k in a sabretooth with some mushkin copperhead ram and the 570 would look great. put it in the 650d with an 750w corsair psu and the h70 and you would have a great looking build, all stealthy with goldish accents.

if you're not a fan of the big twin tower coolers what about the ven x or armagedden? both top tier coolers with the right fans and much smaller than the d14 or silver arrow.

if you did you could get the above with the armagedden and 2 fans for about £900 from aria.

Hey, thanks again, Federal yes that is the idea

Marsey, thanks once again you provided me with solid advice the mushkin ram is some of the best looking ram I have ever seen. As for the sabretooth, is it good for OC, i was going with the big bang for its OCing options, read reviews here and other places and they raved about the board. Plus i have always been a fan of their blue and black schemes, but im liking the gold accents

Also with the sabretooth does that thermal armour not prevent airflow? as it looks like with out the appropriate cooling it could be a right bitch.

Once again cheers for the inputs,

Prof.

You can take that thermal armour off, its only held on with 6 screws. In all the reviews I've read, for purely gaming the sabertooth is excellent and comes out on top by a small margin. If I was in the market for an sb motherboard that's the one I'd go for.

hmmm kk, i was just going for a more pci lane board as i have had SLI systems in the past and i was always excited by the prospect of Tri SLI, but hey ho if that board is really as good as it is then i guess SLI will do just perfect, however.

Question, is the ASUS Maximus IV really worth it as i was also looking at that.

All in All I think the Final build is going to be

CPU: i5 2500k

CPU cooler: H70 (but the armegeddon looks good)

MoBo: sabertooth p67

GPU: gtx 570

ram: muskin cooperhead

case: 650d

Any other inputs would be nice, seeming as i'm saving on the mobo by quite a considerable amount i might see if i can squeeze a gtx 580.

cheers,

Prof.

EDIT: been reading up about the sabertooth and it only runs x8/x8 which is a bummer, and no nf200 chip which i was liking in the big bang marshal

As Marsey99 said, plan on a 2nd 570 and the MSI P67A-GD65 Intel P67 (REV B3) instead of the MSI Big Bang Marshal Intel P67 (REV B3). A 850W Corsair AX Series Modular ATX2.3 SLI/Crossfire Compliant Power Supply should be more than adequate for the 2nd 570

hey, thanks jack-uk, I like the look of that board, it's similar but not as massive as the big bang, as for the power supply, I checked it out and I think I've bagged myself a winner

Cheers for all the advise, yet I'm still undecided about my board, I like the look of the MSI but it won't fit the colour scheme if i stick with the mushkin yet It still is an enticing board. Also I'm still craving that multicard set-up.

So its now a competition between the sabertooth, the msi gd65 and the outside contender of the Maximus IV, but he has some catching up to do.

thoughts?

Cheers,

Prof.

what about the z68 ud7?

ups the cost but is still in budget and keeps the same black and gold theme, well tbh its more in keeping with the ram than the sabretooth.

Hmmm that is a very schmexy bored i must say, and cheaper than the p67, looks jam packed with features, read some reviews will read some more.

However, there is a but, at 268 quid there and there about and a maximus IV being 275, does that mean i shell out the extra 7 quid and get the maximus, what sets it apart from that part.

It would keep in with that mushkin copperhead ram but then we can always find other mushkin maybe red line to fit the asus rog board

So what sets the two boards apart?

Cheers,

Prof.

I did buy the gigabyte z68x-ud7,and im still gobsmacked about buildquality. When i had the R3E i thought is was leading in quality, but the z68x-ud7 is easily beating it in every way you could think of.And 1 1/2 time heavier, the feel inhand

.Its plasterd with features that the maximus only dreams about. In my opinion its 2nd to none
