New GPU Decision!!

Have had my AMD 6870 for quite a while now and it's really starting to show it's age.

I was waiting on the 290x being amazing but from watching tinytomlogans review i'm leaning towards the Gigabyte GTX 780. I'm a student with a part time job and £500 is ALOT to me so i need to make a wise decision.

Gigabyte GTX 780 is available for around £500 at the moment so should i grab one now or wait for the 780 Ti which will drop the 780 price? (or any other suggestions).

Personally I'd be tempted to wait until after christmas, by then they might have allowed companies to put proper coolers on the 290x, the 780 would be slightly cheaper and we'd know if the 780ti was any good.
 
yea i'm still interested in amd because of the mantle and third party coolers but the recently announced Nvidia G-Sync really got my attention and i'm holding off upgrading my 1680x1050 monitor because of it.
 
I see your point, I just got a second 7970 from them in the sale.... because of how cheap they are.

It won't be too long before waterblocks or non reference designed cards come out, so you can always hang on in there a little bit longer.

The benefit of the newer R series cards are that Crossfire is done via software and no longer use bridges if I'm correct?
 
Wait till Christmas. In the end it becomes a win win situation. Lower prices and more options for GPU's and more than likely better yielded chips(meaning more binned ones).
 
You mentioned nvidia having G-Sync, but aren't G-Sync monitors going to cost a small fortune?

With you being a student and every penny counting I'm not sure if waiting for G-Sync is a good idea.

If you wait for a 780 to come down in price, the 780Ti will be at that mark of £500-550 so you'll just want to get one of those anyway.
 
id go with a pair of 7970s or 7950s more bang for your money and that mante thig that amd are going to be using soon will work with the older cards as they are using the same gpu,s in the r9 range

83 Degree's on the cards..... the fans get a little noisey after a while of gaming, the acrylic window gets warm on the case then after gaming it creaks as it cools which is funny.

Looking into a different case, as the gap between the lower card and psu is only about 1 - 1.25 "

You are kind of correct but it is activated via the catalyst software only, there is no need for a bridge connector, so in essence I was actually right first time. :)

well bro i am gona answer your original question cause i am at the same situation here.i got the cash and i was w8ing for the 290x to decide.just go for the 780 and enjoy it!thats what i am going to do.who cares if u dont have the fastest single gpu card on the planet?780 is fast cool quiet and can run any game maxed out and has the looks too.all that w8ing will lead u to a never ending w8ing.u w8 for the 780ti and boom non ref 290x's are just around the corner so lets w8 for that too and so on.....so u got the cash,just go for the card that will do the job for u.and 780 will do it 100%

Turning a setting on, and the hardware required to do it are not the same thing fella, it works *because* the hardware is now setup that way, where as it was *not* setup this way previously.
