New Gaming PC

Hey guys,

First time poster here. Just want to know what you think of the below parts list as I'm looking to get myself a new gaming PC...It's going to be the first time i have ever attempted to build a system myself so i am a bit daunted to say the least about the price of the parts.

Going to use on board sound as sound isn't really that much of a priority and i hear good things about the sound quality on RoG boards, Don't need a OS and will buy an external optical drive at a later date.

I don't overclock at all, Man reason i went for that motherboard is the looks to be honest as i like my stuff to be colour co-ordinated, tidy and looking the business especially if I'm spending a lot of money on it.

CPU: Intel Core i7-4770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor (£215.99 @ Aria PC)

Power Supply: Corsair RM 850W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply (£99.98 @ Ebuyer)
Case Fan: Corsair Air Series AF120 Performance Edition (2-Pack) 63.5 CFM 120mm Fans (£18.99 @ Ebuyer)
Case Fan: Corsair Air Series AF140 Quiet Edition 67.8 CFM 140mm Fan (£13.00 @ Amazon UK)
Case Fan: Corsair Air Series AF140 Quiet Edition 67.8 CFM 140mm Fan (£13.00 @ Amazon UK)
Case Fan: Corsair Air Series AF140 Quiet Edition 67.8 CFM 140mm Fan (£13.00 @ Amazon UK)
Total: £1715.89
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

Main question is - Would you pull the trigger on these parts or would you wait until the new z97 MB's are out and also the 'newer' Intel CPU's?

Thanks in advance

Carl

The PSU is a bit too big. You'd ideally want a RM650. The other parts are fine imo there won't be any real difference between z87 and z97.

I would use an ASUS card for the GPU as they are Red/Black. The EVGA one will have green Highlights which you might not like glowing in your Rig.

Agreed.

You could also easily downsize to a 350D + Maximus VI Gene and save yourself a lot of money and have a smaller form factor PC.

Even supports SLI as a future upgrade if you want, but in that case you would need the 850 Watt PSU. The RM650 is plenty for one GPU and also saves you money.

Thanks for the quick replies guys, Good thinking Rick!

May change to a lower PSU then, I opted for a bigger PSU in case i decided to add a 2nd 780Ti down the line.

What do you guys think of Superflow PSU's?

Plus as you say you have no intention of overclocking, you dont need the 'K' version of the 4770, you could even save yourself some money and get the i5 - 4670. But....if you are like me, I would go for the go big or go home because you say you won't overclock, but after a bit of research and figure out how easy it is, you will give it a try. And your system will totally be ready for it.

While they are all epic components in each respective category it does seem like a monumental overkill in places. So i've got to ask what are you going to be using it for and if gaming at what resolution?

Your obviously making strong choices based on aesthetics but are you thinking of serious future upgrades like SLI? If that's never going to be on the table I would try and package it within an mATX case (say 350).

I think I would +1 the Asus cards too, they would look better with the motherboard and memory and the Classy's aren't 'all' that. They do have some appeal and they look sweet don't get me wrong but the stupid bright white LED's are annoying and the quality control isn't good enough. The green bios light is a total non issue however, it's not that bright and no more distracting than anything on a typical motherboard.

On another tangent definitely don't get SP120 Performance Editions, they will hurt your ears. Go for either the Quiet Editions or if you need the extra RPM when called upon (which you don't if your not running an OC) then get SP120 PWM Performance Editions. Trust me i've had all 3 and all the others ;)

Hey,

Mainly gaming, at the moment games like Diablo 3, Starcraft 2 which obviously don't take anything to run but i would like to broaden my horizons into the new cutting edge games hence the high end parts.

I need my PC to last at least for the next 5+ years without upgrades (apart from maybe adding a 2nd GPU) which is why i went for the top end parts as i assumed they would be better value for money if they last me the full 5+ years or so.

My main Monitor is - BenQ XL2420T 120hz @ 1920x1080 resolution.
2nd Monitor is - Samsung S23A700 120hz @ 1920x1080 resolution.

I don't plan on buying new monitors at all as I think mine are fairly decent.

Not really a fan of mini PC's mATX etc as i like my PC to be the centerpiece of my 'Man cave' there in all its glory so to speak and I just presumed that the airflow would be better in a 750D as i don't plan on watercooling (apart from the AIO CPU cooler).

Will change to the ASUS card then.

Will change them fans then, thanks!

Thanks for all the awesome advice though, Keep it coming as I take it all on board!

Carl

I get what you mean about the centerpiece, although I prefer to look at a small PC and think "That's an awesome little powerhouse for the size", but fair enough.

The thing is, merely downsizing the rig easily saves you ~£115 without any loss in performance. For that price you could easily buy another 16GB RAM (just to put things in perspective, don't actually do that) or bump it up to a 500GB Samsung Evo.

It even allows you to get a full custom loop or get SLI video cards if you want to.

Good first choice, and along with the advice given, I'd maybe downsize to a 650d, 450d, 760t (that's not really a 'downsize'), or a NZXT H440. The 750D will look very bare without a full loop. I'd probably lean toward the 450D for you. Good luck with it too!

Think i may opt for the slightly smaller 650d then as i watched some reviews and it looked rather nice, I just cant get it into my head to go for a smaller case as in my mind its like your cramming in all that stuff and there is no room for airflow etc...now i know i am probably way off base but its just what i have in my head :s

Unfortunately i need to get all my stuff from overclockers and they wont have any H440's in for months and months.

.
Yeah it seems that way but dw, its really not ^_^. Especially if the cables are nice and tidy, as that lets the air flow through.
