New gaming build.

Hey there guys,

So it's been a while since i've built a pc and recently my brother asked me to help him choose components and assemble it for him. Basically i'm just looking for some opinions on the components i've selected and i'm wondering if there are any glaring oversights.

CPU: i5 3570k
CPU Cooler: Corsair H100 with Cougar Vortex fans
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H
GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 670 Overclocked 2GB
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8GB
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB
PSU: Antec HCG 620W Modular
Optical Drive: Samsung SH-222BB SATA DVDRW Drive
Case: NZXT Tempest 410 Elite
OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit with SP1
SSD: SanDisk Extreme Solid State Drive 120GB
2 BitFenix Alchemy Connect 30cm Blue LED Strips. One for the top and bottom of the case.

Any opinions would be much appreciated. It seems like a reasonably solid build to me, but better to be safe than sorry.

This is not really a project log is it? This should be in the new build advice section.
OT:
Get an Corsair AX650 or an HX650 (V2).
If you have the money, get a better case, like the Phantom 410 by NZXT.
You might want to get new fans for the H100, like the corsair SP120mm fans.
Other than that good choice of components :)

I had a quick look and must have missed the new build advice section sorry. If someone could move the thread it'd be much appreciated.

In response to the H100 fans tho are the Cougar Vortex's a bad choice? Most reviews/etc i've read people seemed to like them.

Agree with AverageNinja - go for the Corsair power supply.

It's up to you on the fans - The Vortex's arent bad, but the Corsair SPs, Silverstone APs, Noctua NF-F12s and Scythe GTs will probably be better

Apart from the power supply this is one of the first build logs/advice threads I have seen in ages when the parts list is already more a less perfect :)

But yeah Corsair psu's +1

Erm....

The Antec power supply is a Seasonic made psu as is the hx650 and ax series.

Go with which ever is cheaper.

Actually the HX V2 series is a CWT OEM, and the AX and Antec HCG are based off of two different platforms. The Antec is basically a Seasonic M12II-620 with extremely minor changes to the PCB, while the AX is closely related to Seasonic's 80 Plus Gold rated units (whatever their product names are)

Yeh that is correct however the original hx650 is seasonic.

Just notice the SSD: SanDisk Extreme Solid State Drive 120GB

I wouldnt touch that. Samsung 830 or M4 for me.

What's wrong with the Sandisk? They're one of the biggest companies in the flash memory market, and the Sandisk Extreme is hugely fast and reliable. Haven't heard any horror stories about them at all tbh

I guess :)
Although they'd be using the same NAND as they use in their memory cards, right? I've been using those for years in all my cameras etc. with no issue whatsoever.

Thats my reason for it.

Remember when everyone got the OCZs and 1 - 2 years down then line they died.

...1 - 2 months for me :)

But then again - Crucial were one of the biggest flash based manufacturers and they've come to make the most reliable drives. Sandisk is even bigger, so I'm hoping they'll be a new competition for Crucial.

Thanks for the responses guys. My brother has decided that he wanted to change the case to a BitFenix Colossus Venom Edition so I made a few minor tweaks.

Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 as the case doesn't have a window so spending an extra $110ish on the H100 (including new fans) doesn't really seem worth the money
Ram: Changed to the low profile model so i have clearance under the Noctua. I'm guessing the heat spreaders on most ram is mostly an aesthetic feature?
SSD: Switched to a Samsung 830
PSU: Corsair HX650. It's not the AX series I know, but I couldn't convince my brother to pay $50 more for something he percieved made no difference.
I also grabbed 2 Corsair AF140's for the bottom intake and rear exhaust on the case.

Any other changes i should make or does that look ready to go?

Sounds fair, the ivy is quite cool cpu anyway.

Well its more surface area but its not going to make a difference in the real world.

Cool!

I didnt see an issue with the antec, its just the hx650 rather than the v2?

Do it.
