new computer speakers

Hi guys
i was wondering if any of you could recommend or know a good pair for computer speakers for $400 or less preferable $300. I want the speakers mainly for music and movies has to decent bass i was wondering if the audio engine2/5 are worth it or if there is a better brand?
 
I know that Tom is/was a big fan of the Corsair SP2500s. They're listed at Newegg for $230.
Do you not have a place that you can test such things out? Over here, we have a store called Richer Sounds, at which we can test surround sound systems and whatnot - by any chance does Pensacola have a similar arrangement including PC speakers? All down to personal preference, after all.
 
Time for you to go review hunting, methinks. As well as waiting someone who's more qualified than I to reply on here, of course :)
 
I have the Asus Maximus v thunder/fx so I was thinking that built in sound card was good enough to not buy a separate one
 
Built is is good enough for OK speakers, If you are considering spending $400 on speakers get at least a mid range sound card and do them justice, the Asus ones are great and will really make a difference.

The Corsairs have artificially raised bass to make explosions and stuff in games and movies more vibrant. That does however mean that they don't reproduce sound accurately, which makes them not so good for music.In terms of the audioengines they are nice speakers. They have a pretty flat response, so good for music! The difference between the 2s and 5s is that the 5s have a slightly better bass response and more power. Then again they are like twice the price.

I would get the Audioengine 2s, a mid to high end Asus sound card (DX or similar) and if you want more bass add a sub later. The base isnt bad, its just not emphasised like other speakers do.

I dont know much about that board, mabey it has an exceptionally good card in it but ingeneral they arent that great. If there is a chance it is good get the speakers and see how it sounds with the onboard and you can always add a PCIE soundcard later if you want to.
 
It's better than most onboard solutions - but it isnt as good as a D2X.
It is a USB soundcard which can never be as good as pci/pcie - but regardless, for speakers that's as good as you'll really need IMO.

I'd probably be looking at the microlabs 7cs - or similar - but I hate 2.1/5.1/7.1 systems as I just think surround sound is gimmicky
 
In my experience surround sound is one of those things that you either go all out on or dont bother with. To do it with speakers and have it not sound awful it costs like £1000 minimum. So until im rolling in it, I too will remain surroundless :p
 
Yeh - and considering you can get a hifi with proper bookshelf speakers, then wire those up to your PC and get a grea sound for a fraction of the cost...
I use a 15 year old sony hifi, with:

And I great a great audio quality - and the speakers cost me £3.50 off ebay for the pair. Could get a second hand hifi for about £15 off ebay, and with speakers like that it'd be around £20 - for as good a quality as you'd get from a £150 PC system. Also get the luxury of a remote for the hifi :)

Still - few people seem to share my opinions of this budget way of PC sound :)
