New build problems - wont boot

OK so I have 3 computers to build and I have either cocked up the parts or there is something massively wrong

I have disconnected everything and its still not working.

gigabyte h81m-s2pv
Mushkin silverline DDR3 1600 (also tried Ballistix 1600)
Corsair CX430
i5 4460

I have tried with and without drive connected.

All that happens is the PSU fan spins up, the cpu fan spins up and then it turns off and does the same again.

I have tried both the pc's that I have already built and they both don't work so im either doing something obvious wrong or ?????

I only have the power switch connected and I have the 24 pin atx and the 8 pin 12v. Plus a screen.

Im a bit lost so hoping that someone can help.

Thanks

What CPU are you using mate?

Can you get into the bios at all?
Tried different RAM slots with different RAM sticks?

ive edited the post but its an i5 4460. tried both RAM slots and I have tried the Mushkin and the crucial ram and have the same results in both pc's.

these are 2 identical builds so ive done something wrong in both but I cant see what

no I cant get into the bios, it doesn't even get that far. the screen does nothing

Seems like the 4460 is a Haswell Refresh chip? Your boards will likely need a Bios update before they support the CPU and boot.

really? but how can I update the bios with no cpu in there? seems strange because they are both new.

There isn't a bios update never than the 17th of April.

Gigabytes website does say '
GIGABYTE 8 Series motherboards support the latest 4th Generation Intel® Core™ processors'

Tbh, I didn't really expect this to happen with the Haswell refresh chips, but a similar thing happened to a lot of people with Ivy Bridge CPUs in Sandy Bridge boards back at the time. It was because even though the boards used the same sockets, they were not designed with the new CPUs in mind.

Someone might have another idea of what's going on in your case though.

If this is in fact the problem, you'll have two options.
1- Send the boards back to the shop you bought them and have them update the bios for you. Although this will likely cost just as much as option 2.
2- Buy the absolute cheapest original Haswell CPU that you can find (a Celeron or something) and use that to update your boards, then put then put the i5s back in.

this link says its supported http://www.gigabyte.com/support-downloads/cpu-support-popup.aspx?pid=4664

Hmm, you might want to chuck Gigabyte an email then, just to make sure.

Original Haswell series are 4th gen btw :)

Edit; Hmmm says everything has been supported since Bios verison F7. Considering that's the only one in the list, I'm assuming this is the version it ships out with too.

so now im really lost. glad im not the only one confused. Ill give Aria a call in the morning and see what they say.

Well, if you have the 24pin, 8pin, pwr btn and a Sata drive all plugged in and the CPUs are seated in the sockets correctly with thermal paste and coolers on top of them, and you've tried different RAM configs and it still doesn't work I'd say the hardware is incompatible in some way.

No clue what way that might be though. Give Aria a call and let us know what they say :)

Check your connections and make sure you are using the right cables that came with the psu. Many WILL NOT boot if they are not using their own cables. I've had experience with this with a CX500 and SeasonicX psu. Switched out my cables i already had and replaced them with the ones i didnt use in the box and bam it worked like nothing happened.

Its aria, it's bound to be old stock that has a very early bios. I've had that problem with them a couple of times.

Would be kinda sad if you had to pay them for the Bios update, too bad the chip isnt removable (at least it doesnt look like it), as the manufacturer usually just send you a bios chip to replace it with when you ask.

I've checked both revisions of that board and the i5 4460 is supported on both upto date bios's either the F7 or the FA, as there is only one update on the support site for each board those are the factory bios that are shipped pre flashed..

You'll more than likely have to raise a support ticket with Gigabyte.

That's not necessarily true. They take down old bios Versions on the website. For my board the oldest bios on the site is f7 too, but it shipped with f2 and there were some inbetween that aren't on the site anymore. So if these are boards that have been on the shelves a long time the bios might be too old.

I looked at that too but it cant be anything else. I now have all 3 computers all with the same boards and CPU's and all have the same issue.

Now, I cant have 3 dodgy boards or 3 dodgy CPU's so it has to be a compatibility issue.

Either ive not done something obvious but its cant really be any simpler so I doubt that very much or the CPU and board aren't playing nice.

It has to be an old bios but I haven't got an old Haswell chip to put in and see.

yeah I got most of it from Aria.

I just got off the phone with them, they agreed that the bios could be out of date and I could either tear down the 3 pc's, send the boards back and they will flash the new BIOS's or I can buy another Haswell (non refresh) flash the BIOS myself and then RMA it so im doing that!.

What a pain. These were meant to be simple builds, 3 in 1 day, OS on by Monday collected Wednesday, job done, but like all well made plans........
