New build - important decisions!

Hi, I've been agonising for the last few days over what sort of system to build and could do with some advise because I'm kind of struggling to find a middle ground between what I need versus what I want and getting the best balance of power for £.

My current rig (so you know where I'm coming from) is as follows:

Intel Q6600 oc'd to 3.0ghz
Asus P5K Premium
4gb OCZ Reaper PC2-6400
Asus GTX560Ti (not OC'd)
OCZ Agility 3 120gb SSD
Random 750gb HD

That pretty much covers off the important stuff. The processor, ram etc are all getting a bit long in the tooth now and the GPU is a long way off cutting edge but it currently does alright for what I use it for - BF3, Starcraft 2, Diablo etc but I have to cut back on some of the quality settings for newer FPS etc so I'm looking at upgrading to build a better gaming rig. I don't really do any photo or video editing although having the grunt to do it should I get the sudden urge appeals. I'm also not 100% averse to being a bit of a tackle tart - I like shiny things and to an extent bragging rights (childish I know) but I don't have money to burn.

The build I'm considering at the goes as follows:

i7 4770k
8GB (2x4GB) Corsair DDR3 Vengeance Pro PC3-19200 (2400)

and that's pretty much as far as I've got. Just to quickly explain my CPU choice - I know that from a gaming point of view the 4670k is better value but I kind of want the top Haswell (i want it to game well and the the whore in me wants it to benchmark well) and I figure that as games start to become more multi-threaded that the hyper threading might be useful. Also as you can tell from my existing rig I'm not exactly a regular upgrader so getting the i7 makes sense to me from a longevity point of view. Am I being daft?

The big choice for me is coming down to the motherboard. I'd pretty much decided on the Asus Maximus VI Formula but then I watched the OC3D review of the Z87 G1.Sniper. That would save me over £100 on the Formula - I'm unlikely to use the RamDisk function, they both have above average onboard sound solutions and they both overclock well - given the luck of the draw on Haswells it seems daft to worry too much about how much I can overclock in case I get a poor chip. Whilst watercooling appeals I'm unlikely to ever build a custom loop, an H100i is probably as far as I'd go so the water option on the Maximus is redundant. It seems to pretty much boil down to the fact that I like the look of the Maximus better but when it comes down to it it's going to be stuck inside a case and I'm hardly ever going to see it. What do people reckon?

GPU-wise I'm doing the build in stages - I want to get the system up and running on my 560Ti to start with and then I plan to get something along the lines of a GTX770 once my wallets recovered from the initial outlay.

I'm looking at a Dark Rock Pro 3 cooler as air seems simpler and intend to put it all in a Fractal R4 which (I think - please correct me if I'm wrong) I could put an H100i in at a later date if I change my mind about water.

What do people reckon - any obvious issues? Suggestions and advice will be gratefully received!

the CPU and Ram are both solid choices. I don't think you're being daft at all.

Now for the motherboard. You could probably save more money and go for a GD65 board from MSI and still get that similar color scheme that the M6F does. Saves a lot of money. The money could go towards a better GPU/Cooler or an AIO/SSD(i recommend a better one than the agility)/ or a a different case if you desire.

Personally i would get a NZXT H440 over the Fractal R4 and its the same price but much better appeal to me at least.. i own a black windowed R4 btw. Its a great case but IMO the Arc Midi R2 would be a better case than the R4.

Thanks for the reply. Unless I'm looking at the wrong board the MSI costs more than the Sniper (only £30 or so)? I'm just looking at the Z87 boards as they seem to make the most sense feature-wise. One of the things I'm most interested in is fast boot - will all Z87 boards support this or only the more expensive ones?

In the US a G1 Sniper board is about $200 more expensive so i figured it would be more expensive in the UK as well.. guess not:p

Z87 is by far the best boards to come to market. Fast boot is a waste and with an SSD makes no sense to even using. I tried it with my z77 board and i didn't improve my boot time or decrease it. stayed the same.

You're right i was looking at the Sniper 5.. whoops:p

Either way in the US its the same price as the GD65... but in your case i would get it since its cheaper than GD65.

What do you think from a cooling point of view? I've had a look at the H440 and I quite like the look of it, particularly in black and red. There's not a great deal of difference in price between the Dark Rock Pro 3 and the H100i - should I go for water?

Hmm, although watching the review - no optical bays! That might be a problem!

I would go for the h100i or h105(it fits iirc).

How is no optical bays a problem? Its 2014?:p
Get an external one if you really need one

IMO you should go with water over air because when you start to tinker and overclock you'll be getting much higher clocks or much lower temps on water under load.

If you can you should squeeze for the H105 because in the long run you'll be saving your self money by buying the right thing now rather than buting the expensive air cooler now and getting the expensive watercooler later.

Just my 2 cents but the CPU, Motherboard, RAM and the 770 are all great choices :).

Thanks for the reply - watercooling does appeal more than air, might start investigating that route and suitable cases more heavily.

With regards to your motherboard agreement - do you mean for the Gigabyte?

The H440 is a great case and as NeverBackDown said, it should probably fit a H105 but I'm not sure. I have owned a H100i but sold it because I needed some money for another component but I now wish that I never did as the performance for overclocking was incredible for such a cheap price without having to go with a custom loop.

Yea, the sniper is a great motherboard from what I have heard.

Yes, been doing some research and found another forum where someone says they put a post on NZXT's FB page and they confirmed it would fit... the only issue is the case wouldn't fit in my desk! Too tall! Which is surprising really as I've got a Akasa Eclipse 62 and I thought that was quite a big case!

What size case are looking at then? Any dimensions of the biggest size you can get?
I personally just leave my pc on top of my desk.. it has a window so i mine as well look in it and show it off to others.

Your case is 460mm tall. The R4 is 464mm and the H440 is 475.... or is it 510mm tall? Specs doesnt specify what is height, widht and depth...

I guessing your looking at the Dark Rock Pro 3 for the looks? The mounting is really fidgety and the performance is good, tho not as good as the Noctua U14S according to tests. I also find it a bit silly that the BeQuiet logo is tilted 90 degrees when the cooler is mounted with the fan pushing air out back... Obviously im biased as I am extremely pleased with the R4. Throw a second quiet fan up front and it will keep your system running cool and quiet.

I've got just under 500mm space available. The Arc 2 midi would fit and the H105 looks like it should fit easily in that. And I get to keep my beloved optical drive!

My bad.
Didnt cath you were sold on the H105 ...and I thought you maybe wanted a case otimized for silent computing as you were considering The H440 and the R4.

Solid choice tho - the Arc Midi R2 also offers great bang for the buck.
