new build advice

HI, I need a media server and a fast pc, at present i have msi big bang xpower ii mobo and 32gb of corsair vengence 1600 memory which where gifts. So my question is should i just build a socket 2011 with a 3930k or sell the board and build a server socket 1155 and a desktop socket 1155.

i plan to be studying servers and a computer science degree and may need to run some vm's in future so will the 3930k build be fast enough to run all or do i need a dediciated server and desktop. i also have a coolermaster cosmos 2 case and antec 1200w psu. hope this is enough info. Many thanks in advance.

the 3930k should do you fine. for two 1155s that money is too tight. get the 3930k, a corsair h100i and a 670 or two.

Thanks for your post, its not about the budget its about getting the right build or builds first time round. Also not sure why i would need 2 670's. The plan is that there will be 5 tvs and 4 other pcs in the house accessing the media and also using a central point for them to save work etc. i dont game very often and when i do its not demanding games so not sure why sli is needed. i dont like waiting and i dont want my cpu to get bogged down on others processes but never seen just how fast the 3930k is my last cpu was a 920 at stock.

If you really plan to use it for Comp Sci number crunching stuff from time to time I would recommend completing the components you already have with a 3930k.

Going for two 1155 rigs you could of course build your own cluster and probably get more computing capacity than a single 3930k, but this would require two powerful 1155 CPUs (3770k probably, each with its own high-end mobo), which all in all would probably be quite a bit more expensive than completing the single 2011 build. And buying an additional case, PSU etc. for the second rig can push costs up quite a bit.

go for a 7870/7950 if the budget permits as they are good value for their performance(also faster than a 660ti/670 in most cases):)

the sli stuff was just an option, you didn't mention if you need gpu processing power or not. still get the 3930k.
